Patriots hired first, and took Vrabel in what was a no-brainer. They knew who they wanted, ticked the boxes early on their "must interview" and then hired him.

Surprisingly competent from Kraft and the Pats. They could have stuck to Mayo for another season, but pulled the trigger and now are in a much better position. Now they should have just hired Vrabel last year, but at least they've recognised their error.

i still maintain firing a first time HC after 1 year is an average call. But, if they know Vrabel is better, then it's actually really good business (fixing a mistake 12 months ago as you say).
Takes guts for these guys to publicly admit they got it wrong

I am very much in favour of firing a guy after one year if it's not working.
It's a sunk cost.
You are only hurting yourself further the more you delay
A lot of the feedback on Mayo was that he had completely lost the locker room and just was not suited to the head coach role.

The record isn't necessarily important in the first year. IIRC Troy Aikman had a bad first season under Jimmy Johnson and it turned out fine. But if the players aren't behind him that is a deal breaker
