Yes. There is so much whinging on here that I shudder to think what would have happened if we lost. Australia are well-coached and have some good players. Their talent and depth in the loosies and their new wings are impressive compared to ours and their pack is competitive. It was never going to be a walkover.

oh and I forgot to say, they've improved their midfield as well (although I wonder if Sua'ali'i is better at midfield or as a fullback).

I think the big take away from the game should be copying how Australia make so many metres through the close channels and the forwards. Australia really was their own worst enemy with missed touch, penalties etc. When they actually held onto the ball, they really did make it look simple.

The reffing was random as fuck, and to be honest I reckon he fucked the aussies pretty badly.

I watched the game with a couple of Aussies and on many occasions we were agreeing with them that a decision was a bit rough. Felt strange not to be arguing with them.

But, we've been fucked over by French ref's enough in the past that I don't really mind a square up.

Past horizontal. No penalty. Ok Marius

    Law clarification please.

Thought it was ok if tacklers brought him back horizontal.

    Thanks in anticipation.

JB didn't bring him back to horizontal. The only thing that stopped JOCs head slamming into the ground was JOCs hand..

It's well established that if you prevent your own injury, it doesn't meet the threshold. Referees shouldn't be asking "what if" except where a try would probably have been scored.

We've been on the other end of such adjudications.

With a lot of players who have been made to look like donkeys in the Test arena, which suggests quality coaching is important!

Apart from the possible maul PT and associated YC, I can't think of many obvious ones where the AR/ TMO and ref were wrong. Had Piardi not awarded that try we may well have been on the receiving end, so that's some luck there.

But the Aussies were transgressing at ruck and maul time and not getting penalised as we (rightfully) were.

It is a trade mark of his teams, Ireland were the same. Do the basics well, win set piece, make metres with ball in hand close to the ruck, defend well and the rest takes care of itself. The Wallabies unfortunately just let themselves down with discipline, simple errors and missed too many tackles.

Good win despite the stupid, worn-out old game plan.
I think the focus of the AB's kicking game is to test their own defense under pressure in their own half. Quite brilliant, really. By the time the next World Cup rolls around, they should be experts at defending the line with scrambling defense.

Our forward pack looked a lot better when they subbed off both starting props, Vaii and Sititii

I noticed Holland was the ABs top tackler. What about his defence do you have some issues with?

I think a few times he went wrong side of the ruck when defending close to the line or didn't see the space, pretty minor really but just comes with experience.

I've noticed that but I think the issue is more around the fact that there have rarely been loose forwards defending around the ruck for months. In the past it guys like Kaino, Ioane, and even Frizell would be patrolling that area when the ball got close to the line.

I think Finau gave away a couple of penalties in that area in the Super Rugby final but at least he was where he was supposed to be and trying. He was the only one putting it on the line out of the Chiefs loose forwards in that final. Vaa'i also is not around there enough.

The bottom line is that Holland has made more tackles than any other All Black this season and he's also top equal for dominant tackles so I think its more a problem with others not doing enough and being where they should be.

Do you (or anyone else @Duluth ?) have those dominant tackle stats to hand? Been looking for them 🙏

Haven’t read the full thread but my short take is we have a soft underbelly, and teams that take route 1 against us will beat us comfortably.

Lots of talk about the ref, a lot warranted, but if Oz had Valentini and Skelton fit (and a few others fit) we lose that game.

We are not a good team, obviously poorly coached and are now in the era of needing friendly referees and wallaby injuries to squeak past Australia.

    Could have been very different

    But it wasn't

Come on, do better than that.

I get sick of the "we could have lost" reactions.

    We didn't.

Could we have been better? Yes

Are Aussie a good team? Yes

Do Aussie have greatest absolute bestest coach in the Wooorld! (other than Rassie)? Apparently

    Did we lose? No

Great team with awesomest coach loses to rabble with surf numpty in charge.

Plenty predicting we would lose before the game, so for many we exceeded expectations.

Do I want us winning by 40 every time? Yes, but I'll take a 9 point margin, especially given we left points out there.

The only true metric is the scoreboard.

    Better response.

Since when have Aus been considered a "great team" ? They have paper thin depth, they had to pluck JOC back from the wilderness to fill their most important position FFS! Right now they are a very well coached team playing well above the sum of their parts, the exact opposite to us.

Yup, my thoughts too. There is no enforcer in that starting pack. We have 2 attacking loosies, which is really affecting our work in close as they're struggling to complement each other as they play very similar games, Va'ai who is more known for his athleticism than his starch, Holland who is a decent prospect and get through work, but at this current stage, he's no Brodie Retallick, which leaves us with our front row where De Groot is sluggish at the best of times and is mainly there to scrum, Taylor who's probably our best forward currently but is more known for his work around the park as opposed to his physical presence, and Lomax who hasn't been great since coming back.

There is a real lack of physicality in that pack and it ain't changing as we continue to try and master being quicker than every other side in the world.

Yeah, exactly. It's the same 'meh' team that they've had for about the last how many years now.

I would say the difference is their ceiling is higher under Schmidt. In the last year they've beaten England at Twickenham, Boks at Ellis Park and were very competitive in the Lions series.
