    @Catogrande according to google, there are very few rules on naming kids in the US

    There are no naming restrictions whatsoever. However, most states have some practical rules, for example, parents cannot includes numbers, trademarks, or emojis in their child's name. Many of these naming laws exist because of the software used to keep official birth records.

    @Bovidae assume it was a recent thing (probably in te 90's, purely at a guess) although taking a title such as Major, Sir or similar would have had serious implications to ones class...

    In NZ these are the rules, it doesnt point to an official act, but expect there will be one somewhere.

    When you register your baby’s birth, you officially give them a legal name.

    Your baby’s name must include:

    a last name, and

    1 or more first names — unless your religious or cultural beliefs require your baby to only have 1 name.

    Your baby's name must not be:

    offensive

    longer than 100 characters, including spaces

    an official title or rank, or resemble one (for example, Justice, King, Prince, Princess, Royal)

    spelled with numbers or symbols (for example, V8).

    Every baby born in New Zealand must be registered, usually within 2 months of being born. You can order your baby's birth certificate and apply for their IRD number at the same time.

    @taniwharugby love the example “V8”!

    Pretty sure there would be a few “Holden”s and “Ford”s around. Very likely “V8” has been tried as a middle name.

    I assume “365” isn’t allowed to be added to Hemi either, although Hemi Charger might make the cut.

    @Crucial that'd be easy to get around...V-eight, or simply Veight...parent would likely just call the kid 'Vee' anyway

    @MN5 I expect the Hosea one in the list was declined due to hyphenating it with 'King' at the end, and I am pretty sure Prince wasnt born in NZ, therefore not subject to NZ Rules....

    He’s been to Invercargill though

    @taniwharugby

    Looking at many of the dreadful names in the States, lack of rules is no surprise. It’s just that those names that were previously titled have become accepted.

    It would be interesting to know when titles and ranks were no longer allowed. We had a family friend whose first name was Major. He would have been born in the 1920s.

    Just laughed remembering Catch-22

    A bit more on those poor kids living in the wilderness. No surprise that they have names like they do.
