Somehow they have to try to sell JJ on the idea of being an assistant with an eye to the future. If razor had agreed to the idea of joining the team as an assistant years ago rather than insist on going straight to the top job, maybe he'd still be head coach now
well Scott Hansen is still being paid so you may have a point...

Not for long. Despite his history with some of the HC prospects, he is toxic to the players themselves and must go

Imagine if they retain Hansen under the new coaches.! The meltdown on here will be epic. I doubt TSF will have ever been so united in outrage. Maybe only after the 2007 QF Wayne Barnes debacle.
Was the fern around on 2007?

That's what lured me here and I never left. The 2017 Lions deal was another big one.
The ABs 2026 thread and all the chatter leading up to Razor's firing would be right up there with the best Ferning ever.
All this looking back reminds of my moniker back then, and how relevant it is to the Razor era and what's to come. Razor seemed obsessed with playing a certain style, but the new coach should remember that winning ugly is still winning

I don't remember.

@canefan if we believe what has come out about the extreme hands-off approach to HC, what on earth would they get him to do as an assistant?
If you were going to bring through one of the younger coaches, who would you go for?
Are we talking about Razor? I was relating the fact that IIRC Razor only wanted to be HC, not assistant. If they end up choosing Rennie I'd like to see JJ in the mix, as a stepping stone to potentially becoming HC, a bit like Shag did

I remember watching an interview on Stan with Schmidt, He said in the interview he was contracted as Australian coach through to the end of July 2026.
But would stay involved as would Mike Cron as they were employed as consultants through to the WC.
They would take these roles Remotely based in NZ I took it as.
Joe seems a loyal sort of dude I wonder if he would break that contract for an AB or High Performance role.Consultants role is a different gig to having a full time employment role.
In most other industries, Most of the time these things never last the time they were set out to.
If we can offer Schmidt a role that is based in Nz without travel that would be the best thing for him but as Danny says. Maybe enough is enough for him due to family commitments
Its annoying that we didn't get him to succeed Fozzie. We would be in a far better place Im sure.

Vern Cotter has coached previously at the top level with both Schmidt (Clermont) and Ryan (Fiji).
I'd much prefer this group over Joseph if Brown isn't available.
Cotter leading the forwards, Ryan to concentrate on scrum, Jane to coach defence, Schmidt to coach attack.
Who's the head coach?
I'd think NZR would have a chat along the lines of "look, we think you three know each other and would be a good coaching team. Do you want to decide who's head coach among yourselves? Do you want to work with JJ as he's also in our sights."

Just watched an interview with Bruce Arians (HC Tampa Bay SB 21) about NFL head coach interviews.
He's done a few.From what I got out of it . . .
The most important question you get is who your staff/assistants are going to be.
Second comes your plan, in comprehensive detail.
Then comes expectations; what results are acceptable.Stuff like about coaching "philosophy" is of no interest, and considered BS. Keep it for your book.

I sense Cotter would be make shift through to the World Cup only if they did appoint him. Not saying that’s a bad thing either
Honestly, the more i think about it the more i think Cotter is the ideal short term (2026 & 27) appointment.
Seems like a hard nose, no bullshit bloke who will get buy in and be able to shore things up. He's been around the block, knows international rugby, been in some tough coaching situations before.
He's not a sexy pick but he might be the right guy for this time and place.

Cotter and Schmit would be my ideal with JJ there with a view to taking over after WC27, but if Joe not available Rennie is just as capable.
These are the ideal for now and our best bet to turn things around asap
