JJ has his critics, but at least we know that he will be virtually an independant coach with no luggage. I can only see it as beneficial once he eventually signs on.

If NZR are only offering an initial 2-yr contract I favour Rennie. He's closer to the end of his coaching career so might be happier with those terms.

Remember that Robertson was reluctant to replace Foster in 2022. The term mentioned in the press was "having a clear runway" for the RWC.

To expand, they could appoint Dave for 2027 gig, and bring JJ in in some capacity, but with the 'promise' that he'd take over after the RWC.

Yeah, and I wouldn't be against Rennie either. It's a fair point you make.

That's why I think a 2+2 (or poss. 2+4) contract is the way to go - essentially a 4 year gig.

Look at the first two years as taking over a bit of a disaster and getting things under control and then extend with different assessment criteria.

Yup, and it is just common sense. “We are in distress and we need your help to salvage this world cup cycle as the side isnt where we think it should be to be successful at a world cup. but if you go out in the qtrs, your gone!”

So, i imagine they are looking at a 4 year contract with review after RWC. With both sides looking very closely at KPI’s and break clauses etc at that time.

NZR are not in a position of strength right now while appointing coaches and if they sacked another quickly it would really look shit so i imagine they will have to be a little more forgiving due to circumstance.

In 4 years' time, we have a Lions tour. NZR needs an out before then in case things get even worse. A poor RWC showing, with a QF exit, followed by losing a Lions tour would be catastrophic.

They will have some clauses for sure. Probably a little less diluted than in normal circumstances.

If we have a disastrous 4 years after the last 2 disastrous years and the years under fozzie.

Then a HC is the last of our problems wuite frankly

    • Dave Rennie and Jamie Joseph have both kept their counsel in recent weeks.
    • Process now moves to the interview stage - where All Blacks will be critiqued.
    • Separate announcement on new NZ Rugby chief executive could be imminent.

A mention that Foster could work with Rennie.

Foster is actually a very strong candidate as an assistant coach.
Deep knowledge of the All Blacks, backs coach previously, selfless, loved by the players.
Pair him with Rennie and you've got the potential for huge team cohesion.

I've said before Foster could be a good manager type. But I think they also need a good skills coach.

The article didn't go into any detail about potential assistant coaches for either, just that Rennie and Foster have a good relationship.
