    Interesting ...

The frontrunning Ta$man Mako rugby team have landed a tour of the United States.

The current Mitre 10 Cup premiership leaders will play two games, against American Major League Rugby champions the Seattle Seawolves and the Houston SaberCats, in January next year.

The Ta$man team to travel to the States will be selected in October and will be made up of contracted Ta$man players who do not have Super contracts - as well as Ta$man B and U19 players.

All Black Tim Perry will be the tour captain for the trip.

While the tour was yet to be officially sanctioned by NZ Rugby, finer details had been organised in the last month between TRU and the Mako's Houston and Seattle hosts, before the itinerary was finally announced this week.

The Seawolves website acknowledged the Mako will "provide a dynamic test with their speed of play for the Seattle Seawolves heading into their third season and another chance to defend their title." The Seattle exhibition game will be played on January 26 at the Starfire Stadium.

As with many overseas rugby competitions, a number of New Zealanders ply their trade in the nine-team United States Major League competition - including current Mako squad member Tim O'Malley who played for the Utah Warriors last season.

@SammyC - That strongly suggests that what you've heard about Tim Perry not playing for the Crusaders is right!

          🔴⚪️⚫️ Important Notice 🔴⚪️⚫️

Last week, Bart Hoggard resigned as the chief executive officer of Counties Manukau Rugby Union to return to the legal profession.

Bart has been the union’s CEO for two and a half years during which time he has facilitated the creation of a new five year strategic plan for Counties Manukau Rugby, assembled a great group of employees from the local community and turned around the financial profitability of the union through several successful initiatives (including hosting a Global Rapid Rugby game at Navigation Homes Stadium, a leadership masterclass breakfast with Kieran Read, a house build project with Franklin Hospice at Paerata Rise and an innovative corporate hospitality offering in a modified container on the half way line at Steelers home games).

Bart has also embraced the proud heritage of Counties Manukau Rugby, bringing back numbers on the front of the Steelers’ jerseys in his first year, acknowledging Jonah Lomu’s place in Counties folklore through the Jonah Lomu Memorial game last year, and celebrating the 40th anniversary of Counties winning the national provincial championship by hosting a reunion for the successful 1979 team before the Steelers first game this season.

Over the last year, there has been an increase in the number of registered rugby players within the Counties Manukau region which has been led by the growing popularity of women’s rugby. However, without doubt, rugby is at a crossroads and facing significant challenges. The platform that Bart has established over the last couple of years has set the union up so that it is well placed to deal with these challenges.

Craig Carter said “Bart has made a significant contribution to Counties Manukau Rugby and I am grateful for the commitment, passion and professionalism that he has applied at all times in driving the union forward. Bart has been a pleasure to work with and I am disappointed that he is leaving. Bart has left the union in a strong position."

Craig also noted that “Counties Manukau Rugby is very fortunate to have a number of loyal and generous partners whose unconditional support over a number of years has allowed the union to continue to grow and succeed.”

Bart’s last day at the union is 23 October and he will join the commercial property team of law firm, Simpson Western.

Sean Wainui cleared of dangerous tackle

Taranaki winger Sean Wainui has had his four-week suspension for a dangerous tackle overturned.

Wainui was initially handed a four-week suspension after he was cited for a dangerous tackle during his team’s unsuccessful challenge for the Ranfurly Shield against Otago on Sunday 8 September.

Wainui appealed his suspension and the New Zealand Rugby Appeal Council allowed the appeal, finding that the head contact was, on balance, accidental. This was with the benefit of additional evidence.

The Council reheard the matter in part including additional evidence from the match officials. The Council noted Wainui showed concern for the tackled player’s welfare.

The Council made it clear that dangerous tackles will continue to be treated seriously, but that on their review of the evidence, the actions of Wainui did not constitute a dangerous tackle or warranted any more than a Citing Commissioner warning.

Wainui has already missed Taranaki’s Mitre 10 Cup matches against Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay, but is now available for selection for their remaining three round robin matches.

@Bovidae Ah, I hoped they'd win this one. Only one game left, North Otago next week at home. Last v 2nd in the competition, I can't see them win that game, unless all flights are cancelled and North Otago have to travel by bus and ferry.

An open application doing the rounds amongst counties fans. Suasua is moving on.

                              Re: head coach position.

I don’t have a seek job account so will put my application forward on here.

As head coach of this province I would strip it right back to the basics starting by removing that sparrow that somehow flew it’s way on to the Steelers emblem, bypassing approval from the union’s stakeholders, the clubs. Also removing the Manukau from the name because everyone knows you only tagged that on and moved to Mt Smart when we were fighting to stay in the top flight.
Pick players that started the season in club rugby, club rugby in Counties. Not Australia, Canada, Auckland or wherever hell else half this current squad came from.

The head coach position will always be a stepping stone to higher honours and as a local I’m happy to put my ambitions on hold to stay in the job for a decade or more if that’s what it takes to return this province to a team everyone will get behind.

I would add a special teams/plays coach because anyone who has seen the waterboy knows how important that can be.

I would ride every dropped ball, missed tackle, shanked kick, overthrown lineout, knock on, forward pass. The union version of Craig Bellamy if you like.

I would make myself available to questions on the previous game.
Be accountable to fans, sponsors, life members.
                              Not hide.

                              *strengths-
                              great armchair analyst
quick to tell players where they went wrong
                              respectful to referees

                              *suggestions to improve the team
Bus trips to all away games.
Team bonding sessions every second Tuesday.
                              Cheerleaders
                              Red playing shorts.
Jerseys with numbers on the front and DB draught sponsorship.
                              Daniel Odongo.

As head coach I would be open to other suggestions.

I would also have a sole focus on one team and not a rapid rugby team on the side.

                              Yours sincerely, F Rustrated

I was passed on some information today about the financial state of 2 unions playing in the premiership,I guess we should not be surprised given the lack of crowds that front up to their games.

North Harbour even though they may lift the Ranfurly shield on the weekend are going to be half a million dollars in the red at seasons end, a hefty wage bill over the last 2-3 seasons and lack of crowds through the gate have contributed the predicament they will find themselves in.

Waikato are in a similar situation, but without the hefty financial bill, as seen by many this year during Waikato home games , only one main stand has been used as to cut costs ..

Counties Manukau and Manawatu will also record financial losses for the 2019 season ..

It’s a sad state of affairs ,and something has to give,I know chatting to a contact at Sky during the season , it’s not a cheap exercise to stage a Mitre 10 cup game ,and his train of thought and it was only his opinion that moving forward he believes Sky will drop Mitre 10 rugby and focus more on super rugby ,numbers for Mitre 10 cup are down big time .
Interesting thoughts , I do believe there must be a place for Mitre 10 cup or provincial rugby, that’s where our super rugby and All Blacks players come from, I believe the NZRFU has ignored this competition for far long..too bloody focused on the All Blacks..

@Steven-Harris Damn, that's sad to hear. NZRU seems to put nothing into promoting the competition, even as a feeder competition to Super Rugby.

I would like to see some Super Rugby spots (perhaps 8 per squad) reserved to the end of the Mitre 10 Cup, to increase interest in the competition for spots. Without that it doesn't even have the NFL Draft/College Football relationship.

@Tim I think that’s a great idea , a draft system is a great idea,I know there’s some really good players running around in the Auckland Dev team who are probably better quality than many of the players running around in the lesser Mitre 10 cup teams..it would be harsh on Auckland, but what this comp requires is much more competitive games..let’s face last week apart from a coupe of games were are all blowouts ..I would like to see to Thursday night games done away with..being at Pukekohe last Thursday night to watch the magpies v CM game , I doubt there would have been 750 people in attendance..really sad..I would like to see Auckland , Wellington and Waikato take their game back to the community, say for example ,Auckland play at Western Springs or Waitakere Stadium ,get the local clubs involved to cater and host

@Steven-Harris Would love to have a game up at Mahurangi. Saw Mill Cafe Brewery put on a great day last time the Blues had a preseason game there.
