@MN5 that was a classic. A 6"6" Bambi on steroids.

Fucken nasty cheapshot though to be fair. Surprised Dooley or one of the others didn't step in straight after.

@MN5 Ackford's legs were jelly. It looked like the back of his head hitting paddock did as much damage as the punch itself. Classic cheap shot, he never saw it coming.

If you are Gats how early do you give the squad an idea about what the draft test 23 looks like?

It's seemed in past tours that they plant a flag in the sand fairly late - at least after landing on tour somewhere between the first dirttracker game (by virtue of elimination) and the first weekend hit out. I get the idea of giving everyone the hope of making the test team, but I'd be telling the players where they stand now.

Two reasons - let the media bleating and bullshit happen now and to give a squad that is starting it's structure from scratch at least a bit of a headstart.

I just can't imagine the difficulty of operating the first half of the campaign under the pretense of every position being up for grabs. If you don't have a pretty clear test 23 in mind now - allowing for seeing how it all fits together and making adjustments accordingly, then this tour is going to be very grim indeed.

The begging for 3 extra tourists and selection of many multi-position guys in the backs makes me think Gats is hedging his bets as late as possible.

(Sorry for the late addition, I'm a BIL-fan who has only just joined.)

Recent tours have typically had 6-8 players called up to cover injuries.
Paraphrasing the old Lions '74 battle cry of Willie John McBride "Get your retaliation in first", Gatland is getting some of his injury-replacements in first - hence the extra 3-4 players and the many multi-position players (lock/6, centre/wing/FB).
Thus avoiding the need to explain the extensive repetoire of 'Warrenball' crash-ball variations to newcomers.

I'd be very surprised if Gatland hasn't got 12 of his 1st Test line-up inked-in. His track-record over 20 years is not that of someone who makes a late change in plans. His 'extras' are to minimise disruption by injury, not to give him permutations to experiment with.

Although in 2005 Ryan Jones went from injury-callup to No 8 in all 3 Tests, it is a tall order for a late-arrival to get over jet-lag and catch up on the calls/moves (unless Welsh 😉 ) to be worth even considering for the bench for a mid-week game.

The best that most late call-ups can hope for is some nice kit plus the belated satisfaction that in a small way offsets their April disappointment at the initial squad selection.
And the privilege of becoming a key member of the tackle-bag team.

Ahh, now is that the traditional rugby-fanatics re-writing of history (I'm an Irish fan and I recall many heroic performances that were somehow reported as defeats)
or because you do not believe that I was 10 rows back from Dominici when he took that bouncing ball and about the same distance away from that pass when Wayne Barnes got something in his eye?

After you tell me, I'll tell you about being at the 99 & 07 RWC QFs NZ v Fr 😉

You're not creating a particularly good first impression of yourself.

Welcome Megweya - good to see another Irish fan on the Fern - by way of Eritrea!

Psst - I wouldn't mention the you know what.

He did a good job of disguising himself early on and then completely blew it by admitting his support of Ireland. But TBF, he led with 99 and 07 so it wasn't like he/she/ze was trying to hide anything I guess.

Ah, the disguise of waiting for the second line before citing in my second line the
"battle cry of Willie John McBride"

As subtle as a Jamie Roberts forward-step ...
(he has not yet learnt the side-step)
                            😉

To me, the WJ quote suggests I'm either a Lions historian or biased.

For the avoidance of doubt - like all rugby fans, I'm biased - but I try to be impartial before or after being biased.
Sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes it doesn't.

Ben Youngs has withdrawn from the tour for family reasons. His brother Tom's wife has been diagnosed with terminal illness. Awful news, and the right decision from Ben. Puts the rugby into perspective.

What are the chances of him following in the footsteps of his famous uncle, Roy Laidlaw, another Scottish scrum-half who captained his country, and then was picked for the Lions after injuries to a couple of players and ended up playing all four tests in the 1983 tour. Scotland won a grand slam the following year too with Laidlaw at the helm of memory serves. Always enjoyed watching his sniping breaks and young Greig takes after him.

                                      No pressure then, Greig.

Despite some Scottish ancestry on one side of the family, I won't be pulling the tartan out just yet in anticipation of a public display of adulation next Spring.
