Chiefs 2025

To put a bit of balance into this thread - MP poached the MVP of the competition.
Plus, Taumoefolau is a Kiwi who wants to play for the ABs, it also frees up a spot for a new PI player to grab a contract.
-
That article explains the financial reasons for Taumoefolau to go, but going to the Chiefs is a bit of a risk. As has been pointed out, it isn't like he walks in and starts... if everyone was fit and firing, as of now he makes the Chiefs bench at best - despite how good he has been.
Look at Aumua - the grass is not always greener...

Can you expand on this. I can't read the whole article due to the paywall.
I would have assumed that the salary cap for MP is the same as the NZ teams. NZR does provide financial assistance to them.

From the article: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/moana-pasifika-winger-kyren-taumoefolau-set-to-join-chiefs/RW4FW5ZDM5HNNGY345E6QAQFMQ/
*But even if Taumoefolau doesn’t make the All Blacks, he’ll still benefit from a suite of financial perks that are open to players contracted to the Blues, the Chiefs, the Hurricanes, the Crusaders and the Highlanders, but not Moana.
Under the terms of the collective agreement between the Rugby Players’ Association and NZR, there are various loyalty payments available to incentivise individuals to remain in New Zealand.
A player contracted to play in the NPC and Super Rugby Pacific receives an additional loyalty payment of $5,000 a year, which rises to $12,500 after they have been here for three years and then becomes $35,000 if they stay for five.
There is also a savings scheme open to players from the foundation clubs, where the player payment pool – the money NZR sets aside to meet salaries – will contribute $2.50 for every $1 a player invests (up to $12,500 a year) rising to $3 for every $1 (up to $15,000) if that player has been contracted for five years.*

What has happened to Andrew Smith? I had expected him and Mathis to be in Chiefs WTG.
Smith was on the Hautapu team list a couple of weeks back, so I assume he got a long-term injury during the NPC. Didn't play last round though. I'd bank on him being in the Waikato NPC squad as a lock. Mathis went to NZ sevens after the NPC.
-
@Yeetyaah A replacement for Stevenson? I expect Coombes-Fabling won't be re-signed as he hasn't played at all due to injury. There could still be one other new outside back.

Have heard from a source that the Chiefs have also signed Isaac Hutchinson for next season. Would be one back on the Crusaders

Interesting. He would give you a winger/fullback. I would hope that the Chiefs would look local and convince either Frank Vaenuku or Cody Vai to switch back to XVs.

@cliff had a real stand out game against Waikato last year scored a hatrick, can goal kick if needed. he's short but wouldn't call him a lightweight like a Coombes fabling

@Grooter watched the highlights the lid looks a talent, if jacomb is moving to the landers then this kid is a good replacement but still bummed to loose Mathis to the saders he is going to be a generational talent

With Mathias. Is his route to starting in Super easier at the Crusaders going past Tom Christie. Or through the Chiefs through their loaded loosies. Same with the likes of Wrampling-Alec as a potential target for the Landers?

I would rather have Mathis over kaylum boshier any day of the week
Yeah but from a NZ Rugby perspective. If Mathias is potentially one of the five guys NZ Rugby wants starting. Is the route quicker easier through Tom Christie or through Luke Jacobson who the Chiefs have been playing as their starting 7?
