RS, you think everything post ESB is shit, I don't know why you even take an interest.
I'm no Samurai expert but I can't recall a staff being part of their armoury (or a bowcaster), so he wears a robe? So did Obi-Wan and his fighting style in NH looked just like Kendo (which I believe was part of Samurai training).
I just don't get what is supposedly shit about a force-sensitive monk that fights with a stick. He's kind of like Daredevil but with one long stick instead of two short ones.
Wtf are you smoking Crucial? I've never once mentioned ESB, and for the record Return of the Jedi is probably my favourite film. And why the hell do you care if someone doesn't like the look of a particular character?
" I just don't get what is supposedly shit about a force-sensitive monk that fights with a stick. He's kind of like Daredevil but with one long stick instead of two short ones."
My bad. SW has been crying out for a character like that. Blind, force-sensitive monk that fights with a stick. How awesome is that! And kind of like Daredevil. What's not to like!
-
Right. So the character is still a 'samurai' then?
By the way the Ewoks seemed to have no trouble taking on Stormtroopers with sticks and stones and that comes from a favourite episode of yours.
I don't care if you don't like the look of a character just pointing out that your stated reasons for doing so are stupid.
On a side note regarding stick fighting, I'm surprised no one has used Taiaha as a basis for a characters fighting style

Yes I'll continue to call him "Samurai dude" because he resembles a Samurai. I hope over time you'll learn to live with that.
So this guy is on par with the Ewoks now? Well that's a ringing endorsement. This guy is as cool as an.........Ewok.
Seriously, why on earth are you baiting up so much about this? Are you engaged to the actor or something?
-
Umm yeah.
I'm only carrying the argument on because I asked a simple question and you can't concede that fact that you are calling him 'Samurai guy' because he looks asian.
I don't see anything about him that jars with the SW Universe at all. There are plenty of 'force sensitive' characters around (Leia and Maz Kanata as examples), the costume style fits in and using a stick looks to make sense in that he can look non threatening to his advantage. We've seen that Stormtroopers are just humanoids in armour that serves little purpose. Plenty of weak points in those outfits to exploit. What's the problem with using a stick then?

Other than him looking exactly like a Samurai?
I apologise in advance if it's racist to say that all Samurai look alike.
Missed the point. He is wearing clothing and fighting in a way similar to many SW characters that use hand held weapons. It is only his racial profile that has everyone calling him the 'samurai dude' and therefore declaring that his character sucks.
When has a character ever taken on stormtroopers armed with some kind of stick? Unless the weapon is a lightsaber, the whole idea is shit.
So he looks exactly like a Samurai, is blind, force sensitive and uses a farking stick as a weapon. That equals shit.
Rey?

Slam dunk of a comment there Kirwan ( would insert a good meme if I knew how to on the fern....)
Nerd alert time again but apparently the Emperors Royal guards ( guys in red who stand around looking menacing but in truth don't do shit ) use force pikes, ie sticks with lasers on the end, something like the magnaguards used in Revenge of the Sith ( the droids that hung around General Greivous ).
Surely it would be more effective if this bloke used one of those ?

I'll wait and see if the character is any good in the movie before passing judgement, it's only a trailer.
I do like the fact they have cast someone who looks Japanese when Darth Vader has been stomping around in a samurai helmet all this time.
I'm picking his character to be a potential "youngling" who escaped order 66, was raised somewhere safe, has force potential but isn't a jedi as such ? perhaps D Vaders only blinded him and didn't kill him ?

Or he was a Jedi and was only maimed by Order 66? It's going to be very interesting to see how much they reference the Prequels and The Clones Wars cartoon (which is canon).

True, if he's 40 odd then your theory holds true.

FFS, I'm calling him that because in the few scenes we see him he looks like a fucking Samurai. Yes him being Asian is a factor (last time I checked the Samurai were from Japan), but him being Asian is not the main reason for labelling him a Samurai. It's his clothes, weapon and apparent fighting style. IMHO he sucks balls and the fact that he's a force-sensitive blind guy makes him even more naff.
Obviously, you think a guy who is kind of like Daredevil but with one stick instead of two (just like those awesome Ewoks) is really really cool. I respectfully disagree and quite frankly don't give a shit what you think.
Kirwan: Crap comparison. Rey is a desert scavenger who can barely afford to eat. When Han offered her a blaster she didn't say "no, I prefer my stick", she gleefully started blowing away Storm Troopers. I don't think she's going to forego the lightsaber in favour of stick anytime soon either.

@Kirwan said in Star Wars VII ****contains spoilers****:
Might be hard to use a blaster when you are blind
As opposed to beating the shit out of a platoon of Storm Troopers with a stick?
-
Now you're just getting silly.
![alt text] http://img3.looper.com/img/gallery/rogue-one-characters-that-will-have-more-meaning-than-we-realized/chirrut-imwe.jpg (image url)Those weapons don't even resemble what Samurai dude is carrying. Two of them are electrified ffs. One is of a ST throwing away his primary weapon to make things interesting with Finn. Stupid comparisons.
-
Of course I'm being stupid, we are arguing about a guy looking too japanese in a movie series littered with asian influences.
The scene that bothers you needs to be judged when it's finished. It's not uncommon for scenes in trailers to be missing special effects, so for all you know it could have lightening on the stick.
I agree that they need to address why they were unable to shoot him from point blank though.
