@Mauss Frank Vaenuku must be injured? Don't think he would be beind a winger 2 years younger than him in npc although at the same time Kele Lasaqa has taken to npc like a duck to water

NRL top 30 is over 12 mil NZ.

What are reserve graders getting in the NSW/QLD Cup? That's the actual comparison we're making here isn't it? Inch isn't in the Top 30 is he?

Just seems like he wants to play league, and fair enough, from the sounds of it he almost signed with them before signing with the Ta$man/Crusaders. Will be interesting to watch his career unfold. He's certainly got a profile now, on the league forum I'm a member of they think he's the best young player to come out of NZ.

There is also a rumour that Metcalf will test the open market and it would not surprise me if the Warriors have been sweet talking him knowing this. He then gets fast tracked quickly and in his position thats big money

What is Inch's background in league? Is he going to move that quickly if he's learning the game? Is he going to leap frog Jet Cleary, for example?

My issue isn't with the more obvious path in the NRL, it's that Inch was on a pretty good and obvious path in rugby - if he was good enough, so his claims of the path not being obvious seem suss to me.

Don't have those answers, but the club obviously has a better idea than I do and I suspect Jet isn't around for a long time either.

Jet will start higher up the pecking order for sure though, even the press release confirms that. Inch will join the One New Zealand Warriors’ Jersey Flegg Cup (under-21) squad when pre-season training starts next month.

I'd think so to but I haven't really picked up anything. His leg was heavily strapped both during the U20s campaign and his sole appearance for BOP so perhaps something to do with this.

But I couldn't tell you. Perhaps some of the BOP-followers know something more?

The only thing I’m getting from this discussion is that people on here seem much more willing to buy into whatever the NRL is selling, whether it’s the product or the story. It’s a testament to the NRL’s success but I’m not sure it’s the best way to respond to the pathway-question.

Recent (and I use this term loosely) NZ dual-code players who have chosen league have often had mixed success, in my view. Players like Tukimihia Simpkins and Hayze Perham – who were rated highly in union circles as well – eventually made the grade but to say that their path was simple and straightforward, I just can’t buy that. While there are a lot of teams, there are a lot of players as well, and the latter often bounce around clubs before making a Top 30. Even a player like Toby Crosby (former Hurricanes U20 number 8), who did very well in the Jersey Flegg-comp last year, has now gone to Penrith. Again, not saying that’s a bad thing but just that this idea of “one system all the way through” rarely occurs in reality.

There are success stories, like Rocco Berry making his NRL debut at 20, but I wouldn’t say that this is in any way common. But I guess we’ll see with Inch. I think he could do well, so should be interesting to follow.

To an extent - but if you’re being presented one pathway to the Warriors that looks pretty straight forward then another which is more complicated, you can see the differences.

In rugby, you could have one set of coaches at NPC telling you one thing about your development. Another set at Super (in a different city) telling you another

I think the pathways system here does need an overhaul.

Reading the many posts after this one, seems to point to players going through different levels/comps/teams on this pathway. Can't say I buy there's not different coaches with different ideas on that journey...

I assume the Bears will be aligned to the WA when they come in.

If you listen to how they talk at the North Sydney Bears; the Perth Bears are going to be alligned with them, not the other way round!

The difference in the NRL is you can play in 3 different grades in the same year. Where you can't do that in New Zealand rugby with the way the season is structured. Just look at Makasini from last years schoolboy game. He played SG Ball, Jersey Flegg, NSW cup and made his NRL debut all in the same year.

    Omg.

So good players can be moved up over the season to suit their level of talent and ability.

I cant believe they can get away with that.

don't fucking start. The NPC dinosaurs will gather the pitchforks and torches.

I was doing my best to kick it off, disappointing really.

I understand we'll lose kids to league, but the kid has a point, and the discussion in the last few posts (i.e., kids moving league clubs) is a great example.

Think of what it means to move about in NZ: I'm at this PU trying to get games to try to get Super gigs, but then of course you might get a gig with a Super side, wahoo! But it's at the fucking opposite end of the country, so yay, you get to move to one fucking place for a few months, then back to another place (50% of this is likely to have you living in some shithole - I mean, I did go to Waikato Uni) for that time. Or, if that won't work, you'll be looking for work in the States for half the year.

The fucking pathways in NZ are a fucking joke and from a players perspective, it's no wonder more kids are leaving.

I think PUDC players get $1,250 assembly per game; so $12,500 for ten games (plus their retainer)
There is no minimum retainer for a PUDC player.
PUs can have as many PUDC players as they like.
And if your PUDC retainer is under $2,500, you can walk to another PU anytime.

PUC retainers per player are $55,000 max; $21,000 min; with $85,000 max possible for 2 veterans (8 seasons, same team).
Individual match fees, win bonuses are part of the retainer.
The max for a U20 player is $21,000; $25,000 if it's the second year.

All ABs must have a PUC and get the max $5,500 per game ($55,000), and they get that even if they dont play (NZR picking up the tab).

Official training sessions; $150 per day.

There are NZR PU Premier comp incentive payments for NZC players,.
NZR Incentive payments dont come under the PU salary cap.
Two years NZC player $5,000; four years $12,500; five or more years, $35,000.

And there are also NZR PU Premier comp incentive payments for PUC players as well,.
    4 years $5,000; 5 years + $7,500.

Super clubs can actually make a contribution to a players PUC too, but cannot break the 55G PU max.
This is not in the PU salary cap, or to be out of the NZR PPP.

There are team incentives as well for finals. $75,000 for a home final.

The Premier competition (thats what they call it) duration is for 15 weeks.
Say $38,000 is an average comp payment, that is just over $2,500 a week.
Which is ok, but if you dont have a NZC, it is only 15 weeks work.
If you have a half decent day-job, you are not quitting for that money.
If you are U20, it's only $1,400 per week

But if you have an NZC, it's probably quite good money.
    It'll all add up nicely.
SC money plus PU money equals not too bad.

I saw a bit of Inch playing in his school days.
Didn't have him pegged as a league player.
But, the money they are paying for half-backs and 5/8ths in the NRL at the mo.
    Definitely worth a shot.

He was one of two from the 2023 NZS backline that went to RL. Caelys-Paul Putoko signed with the Titans but looks to be with the Warriors now.

How is Francis Manuleleua going at Penrith? He wasn't selected for the NZS team as a Y13 because of his intention to play RL.
