It is Holland's decision to move on.

“It’s been a huge privilege to coach the All Blacks and represent New Zealand alongside some great people, both players and management.

“Obviously I’ve been taking the time to reflect on what I want to do with my contract coming up for renewal. Ultimately, this is about what gets me excited about being a coach. I was happy to take a two-year contract and the time feels right for me to step away from this role and look ahead.

“We’re a close group so this wasn’t an easy decision. I’ve obviously coached with them all in various ways for a long period of time and we think the team are making shifts in the right direction. There are four Tests left, and I’m absolutely focused on helping this team to win in the northern hemisphere.”

As @frugby says, the biggest under-achievers are Hansen and Ellison.

Anyone who spins this as a negative is a moron. Holland was never qualified for the job in the first place.

Can’t remember too many glorious ‘strike’ plays under his watch…

What I would like to see is a new attack coach, with Hansen shifting back to defence (which he previously held for the Crusaders?) and a slimming of Ellison’s role.

Dave Rennie would be my choice for new backs coach.

This is the right move, whether Holland jumped or was pushed. I expect we'll see more changes to the coaching staff in the coming months unless things improve drastically, especially with the defence, in the upcoming tests.

So I wonder if all the assistants were on shorter contracts than Razor.

I mean while tying Razor in for 4 but his assistants for only 2 would seem a good play, especially when we look back at Fozzies time and what played out then, shows some 'learnings'

Ellison on the other hand has failed upwards.

If it does come to it, Jamie Joseph’s massive advantage in 2028 would be his coaching group would like be highly qualified with an array of background.

Joseph's big challenge is getting the Highlanders humming. If he wants to be the AB coach he needs to coach a winning team. Two things need to happen for him to be a viable option at that point. Razor needs to fail to a point where NZR and the board has no choice but to open his position and Joseph needs to turn around a franchise that has battled for years to one that is winning and a dominant force. If he can't do that. He isn't an option.

Maybe super rugby credentials aren't that important? Razor has several super titles to his name and yet the All Blacks look like dogs right now. Of course he has time to turn things around. Joseph has international credentials but obviously Japan is not exactly one of the six nations or a TRC team. I don't know how you shoehorn them in, but getting rid of some of these lightweight assistants and replacing them with a couple of experienced guys like Joseph and Rennie could be good

@Chris My apologies. Hansen does at least have some credentials though.

Ellison on the other hand has failed upwards.

The Highlanders can't be the wooden spooners, but equally I don't necessarily think they have to be a dominant force. He has the credentials, and crucially in Tony Brown he has a right-hand man who will trump anyone any of the other coaches can offer.

As Robertson and Foster have proved, in the modern climate the assistant coaches might be more important than the head-honcho.

Fozzie's assistants were important because one of them was Schmidt....
