Montpellier are trying to sign Reihana whose contract with the Crusaders ends in 2026.
Wouldn’t blame him at all if he left.
Razor has made it clear that it’s Richie’s AB 10 jersey with BB and Dmac behind. Crusaders have got Richie back along with Kemara signed through 2028.
If he does in fact leave, this is the exact trickle down effect a lot of people have been concerned about with bringing Mounga back.
-
Bringing players back is good. But they should be made to re-earn selection, and they should not be coming back on short term contracts for the WC, that is just bullshit. The Mounga situation is one player having his cake and eating it too, while others who help NZ rugby rather than themselves get the pinnacle of the game taken away from them.
It'll be awful (but deserved for Robertson) if he falls flat or gets injured. -

He's also seeing BB get wheeled out for every game right now, DMac next in line. Plummer was the 10 of SR a couple of years ago and didn't get a look in. There is no reasonable chance to advance with this current management

He, Reihana, is yet to show he is anything more than an average level super 10 who happened to play for the winners. The Crusaders didn't win because of him. He also didn't cause the Saders to lose, which is a boxed ticked I suppose.
Reihana didn't look AB level the times I watched him in the NPC this year. I can see why he isn't getting picked yet.

Fair point. Hopefully he stays because his chance will come post 2027

@Crazy-Horse IMO he played better at super than npc, didnt make some of the errors there that he did in npc.
Has promise for sure, but next year's super will be telling for him, staying injury free will be key, as that is what opened the door for him to get back in over Kemara, after he himself was injured for pre-season.

To be fair, to date hes a 25 year old who has played maybe 20 games of super rugby? If he doesnt take it, hes banking on being a ~27 year old in 2028 hoping to have a break out season and make the ABs. risky at best unless he really loves playing super rugby

Even without RM, he would be lucky to start for the Saders next season. This way he can parlay his winning run in SR last year into a big money deal offshore

Short career for these guys, especially nowadays they are protected a bit from 20-22 and often can't get a run, then finally get a few chances and have to make the most of them. If they can't make hay in the 24-odd months (23-25) when they get their shot, it's time to look overseas.
-
@gt12 Yeah its actually tough. They have to time their run very well and get lucky with a super rugby starting or solid bench role (without just getting shuffled to fullback) around age 23-24 and make a good fist of it. Probably quite clear in the Jacomb situation that he sees it that way. Poor Reihana nearly had the perfect situation before Mounga decided to waltz back in.
Unlike outside backs, midfielders, 9s, loosies and all tight 5 - who expect rotation every game or have multiple positions to have a crack at, if you're a 10 and not playing 80 mins most games in super rugby, you have little to no chance of cracking ABs as a 10 -

Hard disagree. He played a lot better than you give him credit for. No way the Crusaders win this years title with Kemara running the cutter.
He has better orthodox first five skills than Beauden and he actually runs on to the ball.

Maybe he just feels that he has to do more at NPC level, as opposed to just playing his role in SR? He was very good in the late rounds and the knockouts of SR, certainly no passenger

On the other hand, if Mo'unga hadn't left, Reihana's probably going to have barely played Super.
Richie left - and left the door open for Fergus Burke to make a run at the ABs - but, Fergus bailed for cash.
This year, it would most likely have been Richie, Kemara, Rivez - OÇonnor never comes. Unless Richie gets broken - the other two are bit part players.
I think @mohikamo's point about NZ Rugby not being unhappy to have other competitions pick up the tab on elite ABs is well-made.
Richie is definitely playing a mercenary hand, but as long as he comes back more or less as good as when he left, then it may well have been a win-win for him and NZR. And seems like plenty of Saffas are able to parlay their Japan form into international rugby these days.

Serious question, how many NZ players have come back better after a stint up north? Leicester seems at least as good as he was when he left. Jordie only went for a sabbatical, but was better. Ardie came back from his sabbatical short of a gallop, and BB wasn't the same player

Jordie’s been about the same for me. Don’t think he’s come back better at all.
