@Catogrande The game that England lost 16-3 to Wales in Brisbane at the 1987 RWC was a Quarter Final, not a pool match.

Are the pool games going to be ridiculously spread out again, or over in two weeks? Wake me up for the quarter finals.

    World Rugby needs to go.

@Tim The tournament starts on 1st October 2027 and finishes on 13th November 2027 so it looks like it.

Doubt they'll open with Aus v NZ in case we win.

Expect Aus v HK in Perth to open.

Didnt stop them doing France ABs as the last RWC opening game.....

Chile would be more competitive (and more likely) than HK

My conjecture about Hong Kong is down to proximity to Perth, and potential ex-Pat interest.

Yeah but having the HK game in Perth, both countries are in the same time zone and Rugby is growing rapidly in the country there. I'm anticipating that they bank on a lot of Expats taking the flight to Perth to watch especially with some HSBC funding

    Great minds. #booboo

@reprobate We have a 100% record in against the Old Foe in RWC Quarter Finals. In World Cup Finals against the Boks, our record is much less impressive.

Must be an Irish person predicting the QF win but nevertheless here's how it could play out

Absolute joke organisation. Should be seeded like tennis. Pure incompetence, as to be expected. Gotta have the two best teams meeting in the quarters! Fucking morons.

We absolutely need to break away with SA, Oz, and Argentina.

Ignoring NZ for a moment - they have absolutely shafted the pool stages. It's clear who will be the top 2 in each pool with possible exceptions for Italy/Georgia and Japan/Samoa.

Some of the best matches in history happened in the pool stages and actually provided some jeopardy with big teams not making out of the pool. England in 2015 (knocked out by Wales), Scotland in 2019 (knocked out by Japan) and Aussie in 23 (knocked out by Fiji/Wales). Now it's just a parade and in some cases beneficial if you lose your game against the other big team in your pool.

Plus the permutations of round of 16 and 1/4s path is way too confusing. Should be able to summarised in 2 sentences.

Don't really get the whinging, chances are we still have to beat SA in the final anyway if we end up on the other side, plus beat a team equal to or not far off France (who aren't exactly our bogey team at WCs).

Just fucking get on with it and earn it.

    Im with Bonesy here.

With Will Jordan at 15 we are bang in the mix.

To me it looks more of a non event than ever.

Plenty of games are going to resemble Wales v SA at the weekend.

Richie Mo'unga is basically coming back to run the cutter for 3 matches.

    Quarters, Semi and Final.

Everything between now and then is just foreplay.

I don't care about it from a rugby point of view, if we win all our games we win. But like @Tim notes having the two best teams meet in the quarter final is just dogshit organising.

I would say that WR were the worst at organising WC formats, except league exists and next years RLWC is a clusterfuck.

    two best teams NOW.

The whinging from all concerned around the RWC draws has always been based around movement in rankings in the years between draw and tournament. If we slide, or SA slide, and suddenly England are 1 or 2 and up the other side of the draw no one will care. France don't even give a shit about their ranking.

Winning world cups has always had a huge element of luck involved anyway, so this is just different luck. I have never viewed the World Cup winners as being the best team in the world (it's just that usually the best team in the world wins it).

There just aren't enough good teams in rugby to create real jeopardy. And there never will be

@mariner4life So do the draw in 12 months time. The reality is that the organisation is shit. The tournament structure is shit, and there will be no point watching until the quarter finals. It's a low quality product that will probably be marred by cards and pointless TMO interventions. That's reality.

I like the round of 16

Group stage generally sucks. Shorter pool play and getting to knock outs quicker is more interesting

look, i have never understood why it has to be done this early, the FIFA world cup draw, which involves a far larger number of people, hasn't even been done yet for a tournament that starts in July.

If it was me, i would do away with the bands all together and just have open slather. Imagine SA, NZ and France all in one pool? Italy making the final having beaten nobody ranked higher than 12th? Great fun.

But we should all remember, these are revenue raising exercises disguised as sporting tournaments

Which is precisely why they should focus on quality. Should be 16 teams at most, with a proper seeding structure assessed as late as possible.

cutting down your world wide broadcasting money there Tim.

Every team barring the winner and the hosts should have to qualify as well. Get the top teams to stop playing each other every fucking year, and get them out to the minnows.

Japan would still make it. Probably USA and Canada. What markets are you worried about? Uruguay, Hong Kong, Namibia, Spain? About $10k revenue?
