Why not just allocate the top 6 to pools based on current rankings in a way that looks best like it’ll keep 1 and 2 apart longest, then have a draw for all the rest to make up the pools?

That way we avoid this situation, and still get a chance for a fun lopsided pool with 3 competitive teams that probably weren’t going to make it all the way anyway

They can't break the cup monopoly on the field, and have to enlist help via back boadroom shenanigans

If Robinson had pulled out the ball with NZ or SA early we wouldn't be having this conversation. I did find it strange that they went from Pool F to A for all bands.

    Australia were already in A

They wanted to leave the hosts fate dangling

For most fans a 2-year window is necessary to organise travel, accommodation and logistics

    And raising the cash

@MiketheSnow Yes, could have alternated A-F for Band 4 and 2, and F-A for Bands 3 and 1. You know, some imagination. 🙂

@mariner4life So do the draw in 12 months time. The reality is that the organisation is shit. The tournament structure is shit, and there will be no point watching until the quarter finals. It's a low quality product that will probably be marred by cards and pointless TMO interventions. That's reality.

So just don't watch until the quarters?

Rugby making more money and potentially bringing in more fans, as well as the experience for the nations and players isn't a bad thing.

If we ditch "cricket score" countries, we don't get to glow at watching Hesketh in the corner.

Rankings are bragging rights, but WR give the impression they are used when doing the draw, which is the ridiculous part.

The rankings only had a small effect; it made sure the top twelve teams were paired up in the pools.
    Nothing else.
The most important position in the current rankings was probably 12th.
Meaning that the 13th team (Georgia) would be sure to be pooled with two relatively strong teams.
But it didn't work out too bad for Georgia; they ended up with Italy and Romania, who they'd quite fancy i'd say.

The randomness factor would definitely be the preferred option of the lessers (the Euros).
Imagine Wimbledon where most of the top seeds end up on one side of the draw, lovely (if you are on the other).

RWC2011 pool play was like a festival of rugby. And it meant something - some good matchups. How good.

this I struggle to get excited about

    Cedes, still asleep.

The SA loss in pool play in 2019, was definitely a factor in their win that year.
Moved them to the "nicer" side of the draw.

Remember thinking at the time, that a NZ loss in that game might work out well in the end.

when do they do the venues ?

At the last world cup in Aus 2003 , Allblacks played all their pool games and quarter final in Melbourne , I was stoked ,

Until the semi of course .

That's not quite accurate. They played their opening pool game vs Italy, a pool game vs Canada and a quarter final in Melbourne

But they also played a pool game in Sydney vs Wales and in Brisbane vs Tonga.

I reckon the pools shouldn't have been done for another 12 months.

I’d go Aussie vs Hk tournament opener. We played italy (a minnow) in the first game in 1987 and M jones debut and Jks try ensured rugby got it’s supporter base for the rest of the cup. Max Jorgensen with a 100 metre try. I’ll be interested if Hk has any ethnically Chinese players in their top squad. A mate last played sevens for Hk a decade ago - took up CrossFit bug and is contemplating a comeback - he’s a month younger than nonu:

@Catogrande The game that England lost 16-3 to Wales in Brisbane at the 1987 RWC was a Quarter Final, not a pool match.

Indeed. Dodge did not make that distinction 😉

Sitting in a Welsh pub, watching teen pregnancies in their infancy, and about to watch Eng vs Aus... I genuinely didn't know who I wanted to win.
Until the game started, and imagine my surprise when I started cheering on an Australian team.
And free halftime chips, good times all round.

well we've never been beaten in a world cup game in Australia, so I reckon we'll win our pool, beat Italy in the R16, Australia in QF, Argentina in the SF and then one of the also rans in the final.

    Cough. Cough. 1987. Cough.

no one counts 1987 for anything, that wasn't a real world cup, more like a warm up, no one even remembers who won

You don’t have to wait for the draw to be made before you plan and save.

If the FIFA World Cup is drawn 7 months out from the start then there’s no excuse for the RWC to not be done in December 2026.
The FIFA World Cup is 5-10 times bigger than the RWC.
