If the Windies would have opened up it would have been easier to shut them down.Push everyone deep and bowl straight on a big ground shuts out boundaries on and off side keep mid on back mid off up.
Probably would have brought some wkts with batsmen trying to access the square boundaries. -

It's interesting that Roach went totally into his shell after that dropped catrh when he was on 47. Scored about another 5 runs in an hour and a half.
If they were willing to stay positive I think they could have got to needing 30-40 runs off 5 overs and a real chance, but I think they got spooked by the near miss and decided the draw was enough.
Full credit, it's a real gutsy effort to get that draw, but honestly, I think they could have won that.
Pretty big ask........their last wicket fell at 12.30, just before lunch. Roach as pointed out before has never had much of a batting pedigree ( not that it showed yesterday ) and Greaves was hugely inexperienced in that sort of situation. A bit more aggression would have probably led to a wicket or two falling and put their new guys under huge pressure.
Again, massive achievement from these guys but losing two frontline bowlers was a fucken disaster in terms of the BCs trying to win the match.
The interesting thing with Roach's innings (and why I brought this up in the first place) is that he took 110 balls to get to 50, and finished on 58 off 233 balls. So after reaching 50 he scored 8 runs off 123 balls. Despite have scored at an okay rate to start.
I think that showed a clear change in mindset around either the milestone or (more likely) getting spooked by the dropped catch. That was the point where their approach changed and they gave up on the win. Which like I've said before, it's a great achievement and laudable
But its just interesting that when they were getting within touching distance they got more and more conservative.
Wasn't until quite late in the piece that I became convinced they weren't going to try for the win, but it always seemed a somewhat unlikely option.
As the other Chris says, you don't have the same fielding restrictions as ODIs so you can make it quite difficult for teams to score runs if you need to - especially with a limited batsman like Roach in there.

Some of the poms should be shown a video of his innings and how to apply themselves at test level.

Anyone know why they didn't schedule this to finish on Sunday? So play was due on both weekend days?
I think the tour got squashed up so they could get a third test in. So that's why there were back to back limited overs games, and only a 3 day break before the next test.
It makes sense, but rushed test matches are chalelnging - particularly for our bowlers who got cooked.

So in the secon been session the Windies hueadded 104/0 in 29 overs. If they repeated that, they're 503/6 with 4 overs to go. So they'd need 28 runs at an RPO of 7.
Fields would have been
different and bowling lines would have changed the closer they moved through the overs.
Nothing 100% tells us they would have been 503/6 they may have been 450/9 chasing the runs with 4 to go. -
Apart from not having a double ton to his name, Kemar Roach is a lot like Jason Gillespie with the bat. A real old school stodgy lower order bat who doesn't give his wicket away. He's always been a frustating guy to get out.

I'm loving Wags as a commentator but I loved him more as a player. Time to come out of retirement.
A real pisser that Henry is out for the series and Jamieson isn't being brought back in.

Such a beautiful day in the nations capital today that I ditched the hoodie ! a scorching 22 degrees and I see no reason that won't continue for the next five days. Caribbean like conditions for our visitors.
Blundell out. Hay in. One suspects Mitchell comes in as a straight swap for Young.
Bracewell probably did enough with handy batting and a marathon spell which might have gotten more wickets if Latham knew how to review.
We could see three debutants tomorrow, given Foulkes and Duffy are green as grass that will be a seriously rookie attack......they might be keen to go with the "experience" ( three tests ) that Tickner brings.
Henry a HUGE loss. Relatively speaking equivalent of Hadlee in the 80s huge.....
Windies could be cooked from exceeding all expectations last time round or they could be inspired to do it all again. Interesting times ahead.
My team
Latham
Conway ( lucky that Young continues to disappoint )
KW
Ravindra
Mitchell
Hay
Bracewell ( I prefer Phillips but I don't think they'll drop Beasty after all his toil )
Foulkes
Duffy
Tickner
Rae ( coin toss between him and the other newbie, he has more FC experience I guess ) -
@MN5 has Phillips officially been added to the squad?
I’d get him back in ASAP if so.
I reckon they rest one of Foulkes and Duffy after their big workload in that second innings, in which case both new bowlers would get a run.
Looking forward to see who they go with.

I took seconds to cut and paste that article, the least you could do is read it

Are you saying you'd play Phillips AND Bracewell ?
If so that would only leave room for three pace bowlers and after the shitshow in the last test there's no way they'd do that.
-

Cricinfo are reporting that Latham has confirmed Phillips will play ahead of Bracewell.
Crikey, I'm genuinely surprised about that.
Bracewell got them out of a bit of a hole with the bat and then bowled like a trooper in a really tough situation not helped by two pace bowlers down and some terrible early reviews.
I love Phillips but have to feel a bit for Beasty although there is the feeling his bowling isn't test standard overall and Phillips is far more likely to be threatening in that regard.
I see Young is bracketed with Mitchell according to cricinfo ? he's no chance now son of John is fit again.

@MN5 I think GP won us a test in SL a couple of years ago - came up clutch with Santner. I guess they prefer his all round ability, can see why. Do you lose your place because you're injured?

Absolutely, throw in his incredible fielding and he makes a compelling case, of course if this test was in India you'd put both of them in for an incredibly strong batting line up but with the need for a keeper and four pace bowlers that won't be happening here.
Like I said earlier though, if the selectors decided to reward Bracewell for his toil I wouldn't have been surprised ( and the team hasn't been officially announced yet anyway )
