I was just telling someone in the office today that I would have selected him over Rae.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360911873/tom-blundell-ruled-out-black-caps-second-test-against-west-indies-mitch-hay-set-debut

Such a beautiful day in the nations capital today that I ditched the hoodie ! a scorching 22 degrees and I see no reason that won't continue for the next five days. Caribbean like conditions for our visitors.

Blundell out. Hay in. One suspects Mitchell comes in as a straight swap for Young.

Bracewell probably did enough with handy batting and a marathon spell which might have gotten more wickets if Latham knew how to review.

We could see three debutants tomorrow, given Foulkes and Duffy are green as grass that will be a seriously rookie attack......they might be keen to go with the "experience" ( three tests ) that Tickner brings.

Henry a HUGE loss. Relatively speaking equivalent of Hadlee in the 80s huge.....

Windies could be cooked from exceeding all expectations last time round or they could be inspired to do it all again. Interesting times ahead.

    My team

    Latham
Conway ( lucky that Young continues to disappoint )
    KW
    Ravindra
    Mitchell
    Hay
Bracewell ( I prefer Phillips but I don't think they'll drop Beasty after all his toil )
    Foulkes
    Duffy
    Tickner
Rae ( coin toss between him and the other newbie, he has more FC experience I guess )

@MN5 has Phillips officially been added to the squad?

I’d get him back in ASAP if so.

I reckon they rest one of Foulkes and Duffy after their big workload in that second innings, in which case both new bowlers would get a run.

Looking forward to see who they go with.

I took seconds to cut and paste that article, the least you could do is read it 😉

Are you saying you'd play Phillips AND Bracewell ?

If so that would only leave room for three pace bowlers and after the shitshow in the last test there's no way they'd do that.

    @MN5 haha my bad.

Nah, I’d have Phillips instead of Bracewell.
Tough on Bracewell, but Phillips brings the X factor.

Cricinfo are reporting that Latham has confirmed Phillips will play ahead of Bracewell.

Crikey, I'm genuinely surprised about that.

Bracewell got them out of a bit of a hole with the bat and then bowled like a trooper in a really tough situation not helped by two pace bowlers down and some terrible early reviews.

I love Phillips but have to feel a bit for Beasty although there is the feeling his bowling isn't test standard overall and Phillips is far more likely to be threatening in that regard.

I see Young is bracketed with Mitchell according to cricinfo ? he's no chance now son of John is fit again.

@MN5 I think GP won us a test in SL a couple of years ago - came up clutch with Santner. I guess they prefer his all round ability, can see why. Do you lose your place because you're injured?

Absolutely, throw in his incredible fielding and he makes a compelling case, of course if this test was in India you'd put both of them in for an incredibly strong batting line up but with the need for a keeper and four pace bowlers that won't be happening here.

Like I said earlier though, if the selectors decided to reward Bracewell for his toil I wouldn't have been surprised ( and the team hasn't been officially announced yet anyway )

Toil is all very well, but he couldn't make the breakthroughs to win us the game, he barely troubled the Windies batting lineup

Harsh but fair call. Got the second top score in the first innings and woulda got Roach on review but perhaps I'm clutching at straws a bit.

The real lucky bugger in this squad would appear to be Conway.

I'm very glad Bracewell didn't get selected. Reminds me a bit of Grant Elliot. Works really hard, is a really useful limited overs player but not good enough at either discipline to be able to succeed in tests.

Be interesting to see whether Phillips bats at 6 or 7. With Hay on debut, I'd be tempted to put Hay at 7 to take off some pressure, but his FC record is very strong so they might put him in at 6.

Hays record is amazing. It's about time someone put pressure on Blundell to be honest who has been safe despite some periods of non contributions with the bat.

I reckon Wags Salmon Jacket will become as iconic as Richie Benauds cream/beige/off white/ivory/bone one.

    What a fantastic ensemble.

This must be one of our most inexperienced bowling attacks ever?

Love the first morning of test cricket.

    Let’s go!

It's as green as the outfield.......

But let's be positive, huge chance for one ( or more ) of these guys to step up and dominate.

Seeing close ups of Rae smiling from ear to ear as he was chatting to the kids before going on the field made me happy, hope he goes well.

Ian Bishop tells us Chanderpaul has a side strain. Big loss for them.

Disappointing start with the ball, Foulkes especially struggling to hit the right line and length.
    Runs coming way too easily.
