You can guarantee he'll do his utmost to get that right this time.

He's a smart guy, I think he's got a good chance of doing it by the numbers this time

Interesting hearing Pat Lam saying NZ Rugby's coach recruitment process is flawed because they miss out on talent by asking each applicant to name their assistant coaches in advance... Tony Brown was missed even though Razor wanted him, but he was part of JJ's group...

Instead why don't they let applicants apply as individuals... and then the winner gets to choose his assistants after they get the job? Surely this opens up the coaching talent pool?

That is a really difficult one, because coaching is such a team game now - and we have all seen how much of a difference the assistants can make (looking at you Mr Foster).

The guy going for the head coach should, IMO, be able to say who he wants to work with and also that they want to work with him. There is no use hiring a guy in the HC role if he can only get dud assistants - or if there's loads of great assistants who he'd be willing to work with but they don't want to work with him.

So, I think, flexibility is the key thing. You really what you want is numerous guys going for the HC role who have some overlap in their proposed assistants, e.g. you want every applicant to be able to say "I have spoken to Tony and can confirm that he is happy to run the attack if I am appointed".

With Razor gone, Cron might be back as an advisor. ABs will need all hands on deck for the Bok challenge.

Not sayin there are many ferners that are going to make international head coaches, but, there some ferners who have been microscoping head coaches for decades.

They can tell the dif between those who are gettin the job done, and those who aren't.

It is quite a transparent work environment, at the highest levels..

Robertson was actually going ok, but only "ok," the powers that be decided the downside risk going forward would be less if they made a change.
There'll be a process; and if one of the candidates shows up with a presentation anything like the one Razor had, they'll have absolutely no chance of getting the gig.

I'm actually a bit concerned for Razor rn, thinking you should go and give him a hug.

@booboo The next coach needs to come in and break this apart before it gets even more toxic than it already is.

It's got so bad they're keeping dibs now on who is or isn't being picked as starters from their clique.

Will they refuse to train or give negative feedback for the incoming coach if they don't get what they want in the future as well??

(razor deserved to go, but I'm concerned there's a rot forming from senior established starters where it may actually be better to get rid of all of them and move forward with the next gen).

Need to break down the cliques. Agreed.

Possibly a unpopular take but I'd go with Jordie as captain for the short term with Roigard and Sititi as vice captains.

Move on the other Barrett bros, Savea, Reece, ALB etc. Starting bringing blokes like Reihana, Tangitau, JRK, Flanders, Howden and bring back Fakatava in the squad.

    Am I missing something?

Edit: sorry, missed the "other" Barrett brothers.

    As you were.

40 years on - maybe the Baby Blacks could be back this season...

What I hate about this is I'm struggling to name them ...

Reckon I've got the backs, but only 4 of the forwards... but could be wrong ...

Yeah.. why not have it like you say? Rather than forcing them into separate siloed coaching groups.... and never the twain shall meet? Don't forget they forced Foster to abandon his assistants... and forced Ryan and Schmidt on him... so makes sense to be flexible.

He wasn't involved was he? There was a new guy in his place who did the review with Kirk and Mealamu... forget his name now.

Gather the HC candidates, then find out who is willing to work with whom. Worked for the cartel

As an aside... JJ was lined up as a replacement way before the review was due.

    NZR knew this was happening.

They just need to make it so they have the best chance of getting the best options... no point chopping off one hand to keep the other...

As I understand it, the review was Anthony's last job before he left.
He gave the report to Kirk/Tricker/Mealamu, who would have taken it from there.
Because he was leaving, I'd say he wasn't overly concerned about upsetting anyone, and decided not to leave anything out.

Love this thread. Not only are Jamie Joseph and Tony Brown going to come in and turn us into world beaters in record time but the snowflake senior players are all going to love Jamie Joseph's style of 'old school' coaching that from what I hear involves swearing and abusing players.

Also not only do the posters on here know more about international coaching than Scott Robertson but also Wayne Smith now.

Cry more. Just go and have a few quiets with Scott, it's all going to be ok.

It is not a matter of crying it is human decency. It didn't work out for Robertson and while I can appreciate some posters may be fueled on here by the adrenaline of the story appearing here well in advance there is no need to carry like a bunch of feral dogs trying to rip Scott Robertsons carcass apart.

This may have been necessary but it is not good for Scott Robertson personally, NZ rugby or the All Blacks. It may play out it is not good for David Kirk or the next lot of caoches as well time will tell. Anyone getting there jollies posting about it makes me wonder if you really care about NZ rugby or just the drama of things like this..

Jesus Wayne Smith expresses some public support for Scott Robertson in what must be one of the low moments in his life that few here will probably experience or could appreciate and you all start branding him as a know nothing has been.

Lol piss off, he treated the players like absolute shit, allowed cliques to form by ignoring player concerns, and generally completely fucked the culture of the ABs. And cry me a fucking river, I'd wager most people have gone through far more awful things than being sacked for valid reasons. I hope Razor is never anywhere near the ABs or NZR in any capacity moving forward.

I'd suggest given both most recent AB head coaches (Foster and Razor) were either under pressure/forced to lose assistant coaches or those assistant coaches left them, that having to pick them before becoming head coach isn't working.
