Tourists and illegal imigrants can get NZ drivers licences now huh?

The woman showed her DL as identification.

The receptionist was at fault here.

The patient has ben here slightly less years than Lydia Ko. The patient has suficiently met the NZ criteria for being a resident, why is she in any way blameworthy for the fraudulent use of health services

Agree its hardly newsworthy but whats the patient done wrong?

Seriously Siam, do some research. Because YES visitors can get NZ drivers licence....

You are wrong and the receptionist was correct.

The patient has been an obnoxious bitch.

It does illustrate the ineptness/dishonesty of the media though... why didnt the journalist educate readers that the receptionist was correct? That a DL is about as much proof of residency as a Starbucks loyalty card? b There will be lots of people like Siam who needed that information.

    @Baron-Silas-Greenback

Perhaps even delve deeper into the DHB register database as to how a receptionist can't find a surname in the search function.

The head of the clinic surmised it could have been a spelling discrepancy.

No mention of the two parties engaging in a simple discussion of "let me try to find you in the system, how do you spell..." Then a DL would have been sufficient right?

Interesting that a passport will unlock the database info but not a DL

I've not turned up on their system before, but it's not even about that. Some people have to show proof to avoid abuse of the system.

    That's a responsible system.

She looks Thai, sounds Thai, completely reasonable to ask for a passport when she didn't turn up in the search. Not remotely racist and she should have just turned up with the appropriate documentation.

Same rules are applied to everyone.

I went to the servo yesterday to fill the car up. Not only did the Indian guy behind the counter not smile he didn't even ask how my day had been.

Definite racism. I'm going to the media while the topic is still hot

Oh so now you accept that a DL is not sufficient ID of citizenship or residency?
Now you accept it was likely a spelling error?

Where exactly is the racist element in this then?

    @Kirwan

Ok fair enough - all NZers must bring pasports to a new gp visit because its impossible to define what a new zealand citizen looks like - good to know

I thought this quote was relevant "When a casual patient comes to the centre, it was policy to check their name against a national register that includes the patients of every GP in the country." Hence my questioning of why this didnt help alleviate the situation.
    Did the receptionist search?

I guess the patient is guilty of not bringing enough id. After 10 years here that would be frustrating and surprising, but no need to get go bleating.

I assume the receptionist "couldn't have handled things better" sic

I dont like that a stupid story is made of this trivial encounter ( i guess thats what the thread is about). And I gues its a downside of freedom of speech rights

Yes ive been seriously educated about the limitw of DLs as a robust form of id.

    Thanks, no seriously, thanks

I mentined spelling in relation to the clinic heads quote - do some research on what was said

Racist element: well since i never mentioned that, i asume thats a question. So my answer is that the receptionist went about her procedure based on the physical apearance of a NZ citizen, thats apparently the definition of racial profiling

Now now dont get upset, its purely a definition and as Milo Y quite rightly says, "dont give words power". Its neither god nor bad, its just a word that defines actions, and as you know its a judgement that al people exercise in their heads hundreds of times every day. Our government deems it inappropriate in the work place

Does that satisfy your question unrelated to my post?

Kirwan under a little scrutiny, your statement that some people have show proof is not a responsible system as it doesn't define who and what characterises "some"

    Caucasians with an accent?
    Asians born in NZ?
    Jeetan Patel?
    Lydia Ko?
    Pansy Wong?
    You?
    Me?

A responsible system aimed at reducing ALL health services fraud would require ALL patients to provide proof of nz citizenship, no?

A system that relies on receptionists deciding who comes back tomorrow with their passport is not a responsible system, I posit.

I recently had scans on my throat and had to provide my passport as proof that I was an NZ citizen. It's not a big deal at all - just standard practice. The fact that this story and the one about the Mad Butcher make headlines as stories about "racism" shows just how fucking absurd things have gotten.

The Mad Butcher story was not racism. This story is not racism. People need to stop searching for fucking racism where it doesn't exist - the Mad Butcher and this DHB don't deserve to have their names dragged through the mud over this horseshit.
