Another spot up for grabs with Crockett's retirement:
    https://www.rugbypass.com/news/open-letter-wyatt-crockett

The couple of reports I’ve read don’t mention if the international retirement is with immediate effect, or after this season.

    Anyone got any more info?

This quote suggests to me that the international retirement is immediate, but it's not 100% clear:

Early in the New Year I made a call to All Blacks coach Steve Hansen and informed him of my decision to make myself unavailable for national selection.

Good move by Wyatt. Leaving on his terms. He showed great courage to come back from "Rome-gate", thanks Stuart Dickinson. I think he might have been pushed if he hadn't jumped, but he has given great service to province and country.

Agreed. That could have ended the career of a lesser person. Thankfully it didn't. I was always critical of what seemed to be Wyatt's propensity to give away a needless penalty, but he's been a dependable rock in the pack for a long time now.

Nice of him to step aside with enough time for the coaches to further develop the younger guys coming through.

I always liked Wyatt because he has the best name in rugby, but for me his partnership with Charlie F, coming off the bench together with 20-30 to go, was a massive weapon for the ABs and one that they haven't yet managed to replicate.

Who's the guy middle right with his hand on Crockett's knee?

Can't for the life of me remember his name.

First cap. Those four plus Owen Franks were all on debut against Italy in 2009

Thought I would put this here.

Akira really did catch the eye in the Blues first game. Be interesting if he can back it up this Friday.

It's surely a question of when rather than if for Akira.

Worth remembering that the AB selectors purposely held back from selecting Kieran Read - he didn't play his first test until he was 23, so Akira is still well on schedule.

@chris-b Yep, 22 is very young for an All Black six or eight, and this is only his second season playing XVs full time (rather than playing NZ Sevens too).

Gatland and Schmidt are both very good coaches. With all the NZ talents available, they should be able to maintain the AB at the highest level.

Also Plumtree seems to be the real coach behind the Canes rather than Boyd.

@dagrubster not sure what your point is, at that top level, very limited jobs available, and with the ABs success rate, the template for succession seems sound, whether you agree or not.

All of them aren't gonna come back to NZ to coach Super rugby, for the most part it will be a step back, and def down in terms of $$$.

@sammyc I like Razor, but I'd like to see him in charge of a less talented team (not sure what the standard of his club sides were like?) In fact, despite the fact that we've just had a Cantab coach who screwed us I'd like to see Razor take over the Magpies if it goes belly up with the new coach. A year or two of that and he'll be primed for a role with the ABs. 😉
