I'll reiterate what I said about him at the time: he sounds like a colossal dickwad but not a murderer. Try telling that to every feminist who called for his head though.....

@canefan I only didnt bother turning up after I had heard one of the court registrars tell someone that they only send fines if too few people turn up.
Pretty sure on my file there was a box that was ticked saying 'idiot turns up every time' but after I didnt, it was unchecked.
I tried my utmost to get out of Jury many many times during that period I was getting it all the time, not once did I get off.
They were even trying to tell my wife who had a 3 month old that she would have to attend (when she mentioned breast feeding they backed off)

@taniwharugby when I did jury service in London I expected to get off based on the fact that overnight there had been an arson attack on my office and I need to sort shit out.
Not a chance and there were a handful of cop cars used to round up no shows as well.

@canefan Having a closed court session excluding the media and public would be a logical start. Any breaches of name suppression then could only be atttributable to lawyers, court staff, police etc.
If name suppression is denied then a public statement is released.

Oh Christ . I assumed that by now the amount of people using this poor woman’s death to further their own agenda, to get themselves in the limelight and for political purposes would have peaked by now . Obviously I was quite naive in that regard.

@jegga yeah murders and violent crime by strangers is extremely rare in NZ, so statistically speaking there is no wider trend to address based on this alone. Seems an odd choice of case to start talking about domestic violence.
I'd also add that there is a minority of men that commit violent crimes like this, which I'm sure we'd all love for them not to given other men often make up the majority of their victims. But an open letter demanding "all men do better" and suggesting things like behavioral change programmes is at best intellectually lazy, but more likely just pushing the man-hating "decontruct the patriarchy" theory so many feminists seem to love these days.
These "prominent women" don't appear to be able to think about things with any sort of depth or nuance. Or maybe they just don't want to because it doesn't fit their political agenda. It's exactly the same thing as telling all Muslims they need to do better because a minority of them committ acts of terror, without even bothering to look into why this might be happening.
Smearing everyone with the same brush is a fantastic way to advance politically as people love a simple answer, but it does nothing at all to address any complex real-world problems.

While I am sure the Mullane family are hopeful some good might come of thier daughters death, I expect they'd hate some of the agendas being pushed.
Does a murder such as this fall into domestic violence? -
@taniwharugby no, domestic violence is violence within the home typically committed by a spouse or partner. They were effectively strangers that met online and then in person.

Oh bugger, it seems that all of us on TSF except Mokey, bless her, have been off inadvertently raping and murdering again.
Probably in our sleep or something because I'm buggered if I remember them but we must have.
C'mon guys, we'll just have to do something else instead of raping and murdering every woman we cross paths with.

Unless you can tie this murder to domestic violence the story doesn’t really have the legs to push the all men are violent rapists who must to better agenda . This was just an awful act of random violence by a nutcase not domestic violence.
It’s also telling that while they are quite happy to speak up they aren’t touching the 10000 pound elephant in the room when it comes to domestic violence, which is a conversation we really should be having .
In the new year expect there to be studies, committees and working groups looking into this funded by the taxpayer with the usual suspects being involved competing for their share of the limelight bravely speaking up and challenging kiwi men to do better .
