@Chester-Draws it's not about players being amazing on the field all the time, it's about the culture they bring. Rennie created a culture built around the players he had who have now all but gone. Cooper needs to re-build this. You look at Highlanders, they created a culture 2nd to none built around a group of players who will soon be leaving. The Crusaders bring in players who fit the culture.
The Chiefs success was built on culture and that has left the building

Rennie also had the trait of a lot of good coaches of getting limited players to play their role for the team, and play above themselves doing it. Those title winning sides had some quality players, but they also had a lot of solid players who did the right thing for the team all the time.

Actually, yes. That was one of the features of those sides - they really showed that much about defense is about attitude and culture. God, remember those days of holding out the Crusaders, inevitably due to huge work-rate from Lats, Messam, Cane? Fuck I miss those days.

well, yea. And hit rucks. And win the set piece

And niggle the fuck out of the Crusaders' All Blacks.

          Those type of things

Seriously though, here are the 2012 and 2013 squads, and I think the biggest part of those squads was getting role players (Taumalolo, Robinson, Tikoirototuma) to complement genuine stars (Retallick, Cane, Cruden). I don't think either of these teams was in the same class - on a player by player basis (excluding Brodie perhaps) - as the Saders in 2012 or 2013, but they all knew their role and had a game-plan with two or more playmakers, strong midfield runners, and pace out wide, with a forward pack full of workers. Furthermore, they had a fucking good coaching team.

                              2012

                              Head Coach Dave Rennie
                              Assistant Coach Wayne Smith
                              Assistant Coach Tom Coventry
                              Assistant Coach Andrew Strawbridge

                              Forwards

                              Toby Smith Prop

Andrew Horrell stands out for me as the guy who played way above himself and was a pretty solid contributor.

Craig Clarke was perfect in the middle as well

Solid front rows too with decent depth.

The dangers of looking ahead at the draw. Looks like being an official Hide Behind the Couch fortnight for Chiefs fans...

@Donsteppa would not have picked a 0-5 start, but yeah the next two weeks will be tough going. Mind you the Canes usually struggle in Waikato for some reason.

Interesting tidbit from Mils on the shortball podcast:

Colin Cooper doesn't coach, he operates as an overall manager. Two of the other coaches are covering two roles each.
