I think he is also key to the SA chances at the World Cup. If all the parts align, they are very, very dangerous.

Normally, I'd only post about players leaving NZ in this thread, but Hawera is a Kiwi, so still of interest to this thread.

Is this the guy that played about fifteen or twenty games for Waikato and about half a dozen for Southland? Amazing what guys that played/peaked at that level in NZ can get in the way of overseas contracts.

@Higgins Yes, that's him! Did play well enough for the ponies last year, although nothing spectacular.

A part of me wonders why NZR maybe hasn't tried getting him back in the 10 crisis this year, though he didn't do too much while he was here, Super Rugby experience is handy.

@Yeetyaah I assume the Brumbies releasing him from his contract has to do with the opportunity to play in Japan. It's very unlikely they'd have released him to play Super Rugby for another franchise.

Scarlets have appointed New Zealander Glenn Delaney as their defence coach following the departure of Byron Hayward.

Delaney is currently the defence coach of Super Rugby side Highlanders and was a former London Irish head coach.

He will join new Scarlets head coach Brad Mooar who takes over from Wales bound Wayne Pivac.

The following players have signed with Panasonic Wild Knights:

                    Wyatt Crockett
                    Chris King
                    Sheridan Rangihuna (Wellington)
                    James Dargaville (North Harbour)

Former All Blacks prop Wyatt Crockett will soon leave for Japan to work for his old Crusaders mentor Robbie Deans.

Crockett, who played the last of his 71 tests for the All Blacks in late 2017 and retired from Super Rugby last year, will represent the Panasonic Wild Knights before returning to New Zealand to make himself available for Ta$man in the Mitre 10 Cup.

The 36 year old, who now lives with his family in Nelson where their Stirling Sports business is located and also has been working with the Sky rugby commentary team, has yet to pull on the boots this year but couldn't resist the call of the Far East.

He had intended to get some club footy under his belt in coming weeks, but will instead use his time in the Top League Cup to get some match fitness prior to the Mitre 10 Cup.

"I will head over to Japan next week and will probably be there for about 10 weeks," Crockett said. "It's a short competition, the idea is that they wanted to do something this year before the World Cup because their normal competition would run during that World Cup period.

Canterbury head coach Joe Maddocks has signed with Toshiba in Japan, where he'll take up the position of assistant coach and be reunited with Todd Blackadder. He'll leave NZ after this year's Mitre 10 Cup.

@Crazy-Horse Does Canterbury have any new players coming in this year? They were really missing that power element in their backline attack last year.

@Dice I have no idea. Living in Brisbane I don't follow ChCh club rugby, but a couple of the Canterbury posters who know their club stuff said there were a few good young ones coming through. Can't remember positions or names though.

                              From Rugby Pass -
Blues’ Ma’a Nonu is on the verge of a dramatic return to former club Toulon, according to reports in France.

The 37-year-old former All Black could sign a one-year deal with the Top 14 club as cover for Mathieu Bastareaud, who has taken a sabbatical to join Rugby United New York for one season of US Major League Rugby. It has even been suggested a contract is on the table awaiting Nonu’s signature. And comments from president Mourad Boudjellal at the club’s end-of-season garden party this week have done little to quell the rumours.

At the event, at Toulon’s soon-to-be-redeveloped Berg training ground, Boudjellal confirmed the 12 players who have signed for the club ahead of the new Top 14 campaign, which kicks off on August 26, 2019. But he also revealed: “Recruitment is not over. We will hold a press conference around June 15. We are talking with important players. Things are moving forward.”

Asked if that meant confirmation of the return of Nonu to the Mediterranean coast, he merely said: “All in [good] time!”
