Canterbury head coach Joe Maddocks has signed with Toshiba in Japan, where he'll take up the position of assistant coach and be reunited with Todd Blackadder. He'll leave NZ after this year's Mitre 10 Cup.

@Stargazer I didn't think Canterbury looked that well coached last year, so good luck to him

@Crazy-Horse Does Canterbury have any new players coming in this year? They were really missing that power element in their backline attack last year.

@Dice I have no idea. Living in Brisbane I don't follow ChCh club rugby, but a couple of the Canterbury posters who know their club stuff said there were a few good young ones coming through. Can't remember positions or names though.

          From Rugby Pass -
Bluesโ€™ Maโ€™a Nonu is on the verge of a dramatic return to former club Toulon, according to reports in France.

The 37-year-old former All Black could sign a one-year deal with the Top 14 club as cover for Mathieu Bastareaud, who has taken a sabbatical to join Rugby United New York for one season of US Major League Rugby. It has even been suggested a contract is on the table awaiting Nonuโ€™s signature. And comments from president Mourad Boudjellal at the clubโ€™s end-of-season garden party this week have done little to quell the rumours.

At the event, at Toulonโ€™s soon-to-be-redeveloped Berg training ground, Boudjellal confirmed the 12 players who have signed for the club ahead of the new Top 14 campaign, which kicks off on August 26, 2019. But he also revealed: โ€œRecruitment is not over. We will hold a press conference around June 15. We are talking with important players. Things are moving forward.โ€

Asked if that meant confirmation of the return of Nonu to the Mediterranean coast, he merely said: โ€œAll in [good] time!โ€

The following players have signed with Panasonic Wild Knights:

            Wyatt Crockett
            Chris King
            Sheridan Rangihuna (Wellington)
            James Dargaville (North Harbour)

            https://panasonic.co.jp/sports/rugby/info/2019/190524103000001.html

Former All Blacks prop Wyatt Crockett will soon leave for Japan to work for his old Crusaders mentor Robbie Deans.

Crockett, who played the last of his 71 tests for the All Blacks in late 2017 and retired from Super Rugby last year, will represent the Panasonic Wild Knights before returning to New Zealand to make himself available for Ta$man in the Mitre 10 Cup.

The 36 year old, who now lives with his family in Nelson where their Stirling Sports business is located and also has been working with the Sky rugby commentary team, has yet to pull on the boots this year but couldn't resist the call of the Far East.

He had intended to get some club footy under his belt in coming weeks, but will instead use his time in the Top League Cup to get some match fitness prior to the Mitre 10 Cup.

"I will head over to Japan next week and will probably be there for about 10 weeks," Crockett said. "It's a short competition, the idea is that they wanted to do something this year before the World Cup because their normal competition would run during that World Cup period.

@Stargazer Iโ€™m glad Rangihuna has gone canโ€™t stand that guy playing for Wellington was blocking KHPโ€™s and Carlos Prices way and halfback.

@mikey07 Hmmm, if his deal is the same in duration as Crockett's (for the Top League Cup only), he may be back before the Mitre 10 Cup (see the quoted text).

@Crazy-Horse there was talk of her being a good successor...prior to the Folau fiasco...

He has had some bumps along the way, but overall you gotta say he has done a good job and steered NZRugby pretty well.

His only major failures that I can recall were:

                                  (i) fronting a campaign to get rid of Ta$man (and Northland); and

(ii) Having three provincial competitions to administer and not managing to have a good structure for any of them! (The Ranfurly Shield shouldn't be hard, Steve!).

He's done a good job on funding and retention of elite players, but the cracks are starting to show as the NH cash seems to be ramping up (e.g. the reported money being paid to Handre Pollard).

When you look around at countless examples of sports administrators stinking up an organisation you'd have to suggest he's been very good at managing the top job in NZ ( yes, more important than the Prime minister's job, obviously)

                                      Well played Mr Tew

Ian Foster to replace Steve Tew - Anything to get him out of becoming the next All Blacks Head Coach.
