Better than A Phantom Menace is the best I can say about that.

Interesting that something with the initials J J has fucked up a Star Wars film once again.

No we just have different tastes. Incredibly enough that happens sometimes Nepia. My 10 year old was severely pissed off with the film and I don't blame him.
Han farking Solo is killed by his fucking son who happens to be Kylo Ren. And the supposed badass Kylo Renn is actually a weird-looking loser who gets his arse kicked by a girl who just found out she has Jedi powers. Oh yeah, wtf was that Snork guy? They nicked that from GOTG.

Love the original plot too. Secret plans hidden in droid. Teenager on desert planet with unknown past makes contact with said droid. And the secret awesome weapon that can wipe out planets. Where have I seen that before? Guys on ground taking out shields. Pilots fly through trench to blow it up. Nothing recycled there. All fresh and original.

The acting was very good. Liked Ray, Finn and especially Po. Plenty of potential there. Effects and costumes top notch. But plot was shit, Ren was shit, and Han Solo getting wacked was shit. But if you enjoyed it then congratulations.

I'm pretty sure that the plot was 100% deliberate and I was fine with it - the series started with a film cobbled together from other movies and serials.

Better a recycled plot done well than one that is incomprehensible (Phantom Menace) .... IMHO.
I genuinely agree with some of the flaws that the Schnitz brings up but again. It's fucken Star Wars, rules that apply to other franchises don't actually apply here.

Acting was good, it looked great, the falcon was awesome! When does SW8 come out? 😉
Like I said, acting, effects, sets were top notch. But there were Imho too many negatives. Kylo Renn was a bloody emo. He's supposed to be the next Darth Vader but had his arse handed to him by a storm trooper and a desert scavenger chick half his size (which is nothing because Darth Emo is built like a stick insect). My son had the figure before the film and now he wants to saw it in half. He thought he had Darth Vader on roids but now calls him "A weird looking boy just out of puberty who killed his dad, Han Solo."

Killing off Han was just lazy. Trying to copy GoT for shock value perhaps? And who the furk is this Snork dude and wtf was that dwarf creature who had Luke's lightsaber? And were Corescant and the Senate destroyed? It wasn't entirely clear about that, but that's pretty farking weak if true.

Really liked the Poe character (even if the name sux) and some scenes were the best ever seen in a Star Wars film. But for the reasons above and the lazy plot, I was really quite disappointed. Hopefully number 2 isn't a ripoff of Empire with Luke playing the part of Yoda.

Oh yeah, and one last thing. Has Lea not developed any force powers in the past 32 years? That's a bit crap and lazy. Little Ray beat up a Sith by just thinking about the force.

Fook that was so uber-nerd I should beat myself up 🙂
Who said Ren is the next Vader? Why do we assume the evil villain has to be cold and all set. Why cant he be living a conflicting life caught between the Dark side and good side? ( At least hes not Ani who just whined and whined in the prequels)

Why was killing off Han lazy? Ford has been dying to be killed since Empire Strikes Back!

Also its the first movie in a new trilogy, i think its supposed to leave a whole lot of unanswered questions, otherwise why bother watching Eps 8 & 9. (something i assume you wont be bothering to do)

He's a SW villain and a Sith. He follows in the footsteps of Vader, Sidious, Tyrannous and Maul. He's the son of HS and PL and Vader's grandson. Yet he looks like Marilyn Manson and got his arse kicked by Keira Knightly's little sister. Basically he's shit. What kid would want that figure? It's the equivalent of Lea beating up on Darth Vader in E4. Yeah that would have been awesome.

Killing off a major character like that is just lazy. It's what every show, movie, book does when they run out of ideas. It was a crap scene as well. As soon as Darth Emo just happened to wander onto that railess bridge you knew Han was a dead man. And who gives a shit if Ford wanted him to die. If that was his condition for doing the film then leave him out. It's not like his inclusion would make any difference at the box office.

Rancid, Ren hasn't finished his training and was injured twice before his fight with Rey.

The scene on the bridge was his big test to turn to the dark side. I expect we won't see both Rey and Ren at the peak of their powers until Episode 9.

You are assuming he's a Sith as well, there are only two of those but we clearly see several knights of Ren.

I think it all fits with the try hard nature of the First Order. They are desperate to be the Empire, but not quite. Same with Ren, desperate to be like Vader but not quite.

And recycling the plot is very Star Wars, same criticisms were levelled at Return of the Jedi.

This film had a lot of work to do, its main job was to make you forget about the shitty prequels and introduce the new characters.

Succeeded widely at that.

That final scene was wonderful, and certainly not a repeat of anything I've seen in Star Wars.

The Starkiller base was a mcguffin, the whole movie was about finding Luke.

I really enjoyed it, and not because it ticked off the geeky over analysed side of the Star wars universe but because it didn't. It was a re-boot, pure and obvious.

In order to breathe new life into the thing Lucas almost killed they have gone back to the start and recaptured the magic that was the original. Clear goodies and baddies, someone to cheer for, some humour, some tragedy, some cool action.

The only bit I thought wasn't necessary was the creatures on the freighter. Seemed to be a set piece for the sake of it. I would have rather seen Han just shoot the bad guys and make a run for it.

Thought the Falcon was awesome and the X-Wing scenes very cool.

I also got the impression that after putting aside the old extended universe and novels for a new canon they have taken nods to the good parts of those stories. In the novels it was Chewie the was killed off, causing Han to flip out and break up from Leia for a while. One of their kids (the boy) then goes darkside.

Yes, but his second injury was inflicted by an ex stormtrooper who had recently been handed his arse by a former comrade brandishing a large curling iron. He may not be a Sith but he was trained by Luke and has gone over to the dark side. He should have been able to defeat Rey blind and with half his limbs cut off. He's just farking crap.

Let's face it, the film was more a reboot than a continuation of the series. Massive potential there, but IMHO could and should have been much better.

Yes, the first injury was caused by a weapon they spent most of the movie showing how powerful it was.

I really liked that the villain was overly arrogant about his abilities and then got his arse handed to him. Sets up a pretty cool dynamic for the rematch.

And Ren did beat Finn fairly easily in the end, even being injured.

If look hard at any movie you will find quibbles. I've seen it twice and wasn't bored at any stage, best aspect was they nailed the humour. Was surprised how funny it was.

Wow, how shit was captain Phasma? Even Boba Fett went out with more dignity and fight than she did. I was expecting some sort of awesome shoot out at the very least.

as Virg said Ren lost all sense of menace the moment he took off the mask. His Emo tantrum of slicing the place up with his lightsabre was particularly bitch like.

I also didn't like the scene of the two rival gangs, one of them sounding suspiciously glasgwegian, going after Han. The guy is a hero of the rebellion for fuck sake.

The plot was such a rip off of ANH that is was ridiculous but the movie as a whole was still absolutely sensational. Some cool dog fights, cool lightsabre battles, great lines from Han, a couple of fresh new characters.....like others I have a feeling the new flick will be twice as good at least.....
