Watling will probably sacrifice his wicket here to score quick runs, man is selfless exemplified in a team that is pretty selfless.

I don't think we need to do anything silly to up the ante any further. 4 an over is fine, if we continue like this to the close of play we'll have a lead well above 300 with two days to play.

Sumo just called Nicholls reaching 150 an outstanding innings.

I think that is pushing it.

On one leg, scoring a 150 runs, is not outstanding?? Hard man to please!

I'm immensely proud of this team and the fight they give to win (Nichols and Wagner especially)

        Tough crowd all right!!

After all the airy fairy batsmen we've had over the years that couldn't get their average above the 30s (or even 20s) we now have a bloke averaging mid-40s with 7 tons and people want him dropped because he's had a few let offs this year. Black Caps fans expectations are at an all time high. It's like being pissy at the ABs for "not winning the right way".

Averaging less than 20 over the last two seasons if simple catches are taken.

I think Nicholls is a quality batsman and we're lucky to have him. I also think Conway has a higher ceiling and isn't getting any younger.

I know we're prone to hyperbole and kneejerk reactions as members of the interwebz, but surely it's not too harsh to judge a man on his own performance, not the oppositions', over a good 15 months?

Nicholls this summer if he'd been out the first genuine chance he'd given: 7, 47, 6, 11, 3. Average 14.6.
Nicholls this summer if he'd been out the second genuine chance he'd given: 7, 47, 56, 11, 86. Average 41.4
          Nicholls this summer after a million chances: 7, 174, 56, 11, 138*. Average 96.5.

Methinks the lad is a little flattered.

Pakistan is not a good test side even more so when they are missing at least two players that would walk into the current side.

“Luck” like dropped catches, poor bowling decisions etc have been a part of the game since Adam put on the whites, but you’ve still got to put the runs on. Nicholls isn’t the first batsman that has a few flaws to make runs against a lesser side...

I recall Kevin Pietersen achieving super hero status in an Ashes decider being dropped numerous times.

Absolutely, in 2 years from now (if that), nobody will care about the drops, it will just be recorded that Nicholls scored 157 and shared a record partnership with Kane. We won the last West Indies test on the back of his 174 after the rest of the top order struggled. He's not Kane or Ross, but he's a fine number 5 who has come through when we desperately needed him to.

                    Bloody rain!

Bring test cricket to Whangarei, we haven’t had summer rain for 5 or 6 years now.

I'd love to know watling's average when he comes in with less than 150 vs more than 300. He's the polar opposite of a flat track bully. Only scores runs in the toughest conditions. Combined that with being a super reliable keeper and he's low key one of the most important players in the team.

I think reviewing players records and changing their average based on every chance they give being taken is pretty tough and a lot of players records, Kane included, would be far inferior.

                          If.

I'd love to know watling's average when he comes in with less than 150 vs more than 300. He's the polar opposite of a flat track bully. Only scores runs in the toughest conditions. Combined that with being a super reliable keeper and he's low key one of the most important players in the team.

He's definitely not one for situations where quick runs are the order of the day. I don't think statsguru is set up for that type of query, so would require doing it manually.

Off for rain. We might have to declare earlier.

Craig McMillan is so out of sorts with his commentary today. So many incorrect words used and getting batsmen wrong. Just weird for him as he is usually quite good.

A few times this summer I’ve thought “well the Australians don’t drop this many catches against us”... but then I watched how many chances they spilled at the MCG last week 🙂

the accidental c bomb might have something to do with it.
