@kiwiwomble All except City have been in since the beginning. They were in the 3rd tier as recently as 1999

@dogmeat so not since they got they're current backer, these owners are either paranoid or they are tired of paying for a good squad and wanted to be able to ease off investment
@kiwiwomble I think they thought they could get a bigger piece of a bigger pie.
However they were obviously relying on pay per view as both Amazon and Sky said they weren't interested in TV rights.
So appealing to the Netflix generation and as has been said probably East and SE Asia more than Europe.

As @mofitzy_ says, it's not so much relegation from your domestic league that is the motivation behind this, but not being an automatic qualifier for the CL (top 4 in EPL). Playing in the CL brings in money which allows you to make a profit and strengthen your squad. The rich would just get richer.

in other good news Wimbledon have now won four on the trot and scored 14, not yet safe but putting up a bloody good fight, fourth in the form table
this whole debacle might make a lot of fans look at things like the "german model" or fan owned models like us

And the arrogance of the supporters of the Big 2 in Spain and Juventus. They seem to think that playing smaller clubs is beneath them. I might be wrong on this, but I think the Poms and Germans look at European football as the icing on the cake while it’s the be all and end all for the Spanish and Italians. I don’t think we’ve quite seen the end of this. Just begun this war has.

Again, doing this without even informing the players and managers was crazy. Obviously they didn’t want leaks, but placing the players and managers in such an impossible position was never going to end well.

I'm not so sure they will. The EPL clubs are still cash cows. Just not so much right now

For over 25 years now the threat of forming a super league has been held over UEFA, forcing the reform of the European Champions Cup into the European Champions League in the mid-90s. Plus all the further tweaks since then to entry conditions and TV money distribution.
In just 48 hours they have destroyed their 30 year old bargaining leverage that they could hold over them. They called their own bluff and lost.
Uefa and mid-range clubs could use this opportunity to re-balance it a bit. But, they won't.
But the threat has disappeared for at least a decade. It's now a hollow threat.

I'm not so sure they will. The EPL clubs are still cash cows. Just not so much right now
im not sure they will either, just wondering if any will, if this super league was so important to them....

I think the two Spanish giants will need to partially privatise, now.
So, ironically, the change of ownership we could see from this will see 2 of the member owned clubs go partially private. They have like 1 billion dollar debts secured either against increasing future income or option to sell the currently un-monetised ownership of the club.
