Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham have joined Chelsea and Manchester City in signalling their intention to withdraw from the European Super League.
The announcement on Sunday by the 12 clubs to form a breakaway Super League prompted a furious backlash across the continent.

    The grovelling has begun.

really has a feel of ... oh wait, you don't have a plan for the backlash? shit, we hadn't thought about that either! ummm, how about Chelsea, do you think they have a plan? ooooh so no one knows jack shit aside from the owners.... ah, yeah. That's going to be a tad problematic.

      Pull out!!

This demonstrates the arrogance of the US owners, and the likes of Perez and Agnelli.

And the arrogance of the supporters of the Big 2 in Spain and Juventus. They seem to think that playing smaller clubs is beneath them. I might be wrong on this, but I think the Poms and Germans look at European football as the icing on the cake while it’s the be all and end all for the Spanish and Italians. I don’t think we’ve quite seen the end of this. Just begun this war has.

Again, doing this without even informing the players and managers was crazy. Obviously they didn’t want leaks, but placing the players and managers in such an impossible position was never going to end well.

@rancid-schnitzel If these US owners leave with their tails between their legs, then the last 48 h would have been worth it.

yeah, could be interesting if any of these clubs end up on the market, if the owners are pissed off enough

I'm not so sure they will. The EPL clubs are still cash cows. Just not so much right now

For over 25 years now the threat of forming a super league has been held over UEFA, forcing the reform of the European Champions Cup into the European Champions League in the mid-90s. Plus all the further tweaks since then to entry conditions and TV money distribution.

In just 48 hours they have destroyed their 30 year old bargaining leverage that they could hold over them. They called their own bluff and lost.

Uefa and mid-range clubs could use this opportunity to re-balance it a bit. But, they won't.

But the threat has disappeared for at least a decade. It's now a hollow threat.

All over in less than 47 hours. I've been on drinking sessions that lasted longer than that.

I think the two Spanish giants will need to partially privatise, now.

So, ironically, the change of ownership we could see from this will see 2 of the member owned clubs go partially private. They have like 1 billion dollar debts secured either against increasing future income or option to sell the currently un-monetised ownership of the club.

I thought RM was always referred to as Franco's team. So maybe owned by the provincial government?

                                haha what a fucking joke

i am astounded at the stupidity of people in charge of that much money. Now they all look fucking idiotic. And weak, so weak.

As a casual Liverpool supporter, who already had his interest reduced by the move to Optus Sports, this is pretty much the final straw. The owners were willing to chuck everyone aside given the opportunity. So fuck 'em.

Not that they care, i didn't spend a dime on the club or their product anyway.

@rancid-schnitzel If these US owners leave with their tails between their legs, then the last 48 h would have been worth it.

yeah, could be interesting if any of these clubs end up on the market, if the owners are pissed off enough

I think the two Spanish giants will need to partially privatise, now.

So, ironically, the change of ownership we could see from this will see 2 of the member owned clubs go partially private. They have like 1 billion dollar debts secured either against increasing future income or option to sell the currently un-monetised ownership of the club.

                                  Who owns them right now?

                                  Their members.

Their members elect a president, who serves for 4 years, who then makes decisions on their behalf and runs the club. Both clubs have been happy to elect presidents who have built up billion dollar debts to compete with the higher domestic TV money in the the EPL, they don't just compete though, they out-compete.

If Madrid and Barca want to continue competing financially against the other European giants, their most likely option will eventually be to privatise part of the club. They've already maxed out their borrowing against hard assets and future TV income.

That is not necesarily a disaster. IIRC only 3 of the Spanish clubs are member owned (I can't remeber the third, maybe Athletic Bilbao?), the rest are private owned.

As for partial privatisation, that is the common German model. Bayern are 88% member owned, rest private,.

The boat was stuck blocking the Suez Canal longer than the European Super League lasted.

So unfair. These guys were just “saving football”.
