    @frank

Anything less than a record-smashing gold medal would have to be considered a failure.

I just rewatched the South Park and Joe Rogan episodes about trans-athletics, both good.

In fairness, I did watch a counter-argument critical of the S.P. episode from a very cute American trans perspective, and while I can’t say I’m convinced, s/he does make the case that the “bigoted” stereotype about trans athlete is always power-lifters, and that it’s ridiculous to mention this because U.S. power-lifting forbids trans-athletes from competing in womens power-lifting events. Which seems to me a strong inference from a trans perspective that trans power-lifters do indeed have an unfair advantage over female athletes. And also, obviously, that there’s some merit & justification in the stereotype. After all, the first trans Olympian will be a power lifter, as predicted by the Prophets at South Park.

@frank said in Trans in sport / Laurel Hubbard:

You know things have got a bit too woke when a Guardian writer is against Hubbard being able to compete.

Interesting admission by Serena Williams halfway down the article. I guess John McEnroe was right.

Fairness is at the heart of sport and without separate categories for the sexes there would be no women in Olympic finals

    Great article

I saw they asked the GB women's weight lifter what she thought of Hubbard in a presser, and after a long pause she just said "no thank you".

It's so ridiculous that they can't even express their thoughts on this, given it's such an obvious farce that Hubbard is allowed to compete. The world is going crazy.

Edit - here's the clip. It was the American that ended up answering.

Not true unfortunately. Fallon Fox broke the eye socket of a female opponent back in 2014.

New guidelines for transgender participation unveiled by UK sports councils

New guidelines for transgender participation unveiled by UK sports councils

There is no magic solution that balances the inclusion of trans women in female sport while guaranteeing competitive fairness and safety, new guidelines for sport across the UK conclude

"Trans women retain physique, stamina and strength advantages when competing in female sport, even when they reduce their testosterone levels, new guidelines for transgender participation in national and grassroots sport published by the UK sports councils will say on Thursday.

The long-awaited report argues there is no magic solution which balances the inclusion of trans women in female sport while guaranteeing competitive fairness and safety. And, for the first time, it tells sports across Britain that they will have to choose which to prioritise."

Per UK Equality Act 2010, transgender folk may legally be excluded from participation in sport "if this is necessary to uphold fair or safe competition, but not otherwise" https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/721725/GRA-Consultation-document.pdf#page=74

In fact it goes back further to the Gender Reform Bill of 2004 when it was discussed extensively. It seems a sensible balance even now imho, and nothing has changed legally.

My two ( slightly drunken, I’m celebrating ) cents.

In terms of what blokes have over girls physically I think the main one ( and I’m sure there is science to back me up ) is striking ability. Fairly sure the difference between the hardest punching guy vs the hardest punching girl is huge.

This should be taken into account in something as potentially dangerous as this.

As much as I’m 100% on the opposite side of this argument, these two pics do suggest whatever drugs they use do drastically reduce their physicality.
