Sounds like they’ve realized that neither Cane nor Savea automatically hold their place, so this is the right call (or Smith could work as well).

I’d hope so but I doubt that’s their thinking, Foster happy to move players/captaincy to fit his plans rather than form.

Plumtree said the All Blacks coaches believed Whitelock, who captained the side when they played in New Zealand, was the right man to lead the side in the weeks ahead.

Fixed it, he a lock in until RWC IMO, and a real leader

Careful - the last captain we locked in to the RWC fell off a cliff with form

Sam Cane is as realistic as he is resolute. So for the experienced All Blacks flanker, and 2020 captain, his mindset has quickly shifted to the final fortnight of this tour, by which time he hopes to be knocking loudly on the door of test selection.

Cane, on Tuesday (NZT) from Cardiff, revealed a planned timeline between he and coach Ian Foster that has him regrouping following his return to test footy via a half-hour off the bench in the 104-14 romp over the USA in Washington DC at the weekend.

By his own admission, Cane is still not ready for a full-blown test against a tier-1 nation, such as this weekend’s clash against Wales at a sold-out Principality Stadium in Cardiff, after a six-month rehabilitation from shoulder surgery to repair a pectoral muscle tear.

But he hopes the next fortnight will nudge him close enough for the selectors to at least have something to think about ahead of that brutal finish against Ireland in Dublin (November 13) and France in Paris (November 20).

“I’m not quite in good enough shape or sharp enough to be playing test match footy right now. My mindset is similar to when I first made the squad and knew I was going to get bugger-all game-time – to target each day and try to be a better rugby player by the end of the week, and hopefully I’ll get up to speed reasonably quickly.

Weird, he wants/expects to be selected for the two most difficult tests on this tour, without playing in the two easier tests? He's seriously undercooked already; that won't change if he doesn't play. 🤔

Why is almost everyone in NZ assuming Saturday against Wales is going to be an easy test? Wales are the 6 Nations champions and have been targeting this game for months. Alun Wyn Jones is one of the great leaders in Rugby history. They will follow the blueprint Eddie Jones laid down in Yokohama two years ago of winning the collisions, giving nothing, shutting the ABs down.

A win would mean absolutely everything to them after only tasting defeat against the ABs since 1953. Any sense of complacency will be rewarded with pain.

@sparky because a welsh poster has told us that most of their A players are not available for this game as it's out of the normal window.

Or are you saying that Wales B is going to be a hard game for our A team?

There are only 3 or so starters not available due to window, that's a pile of shit. Big excuse in the making. There are, however, a ton of injuries - but that's just bad luck.

Fair enough, was just parroting what I read. Injuries don't count, we have players out too.

I would struggle to find even one example of any AB team go out with the intention of taking it lightly because they think they have got it in the bag. The suggestion itself is laughable, our away record speaks for itself as does the pride the team have in the jersey..

@kirwan How many Wales front line players are in fact missing and how far will the absences actually weaken their team?

Remember against Argentina last year, Ireland in Chicago and New South Wales County in 1992. All games that were assumed to be easy beforehand but were anytbing but.

Sam Cane is as realistic as he is resolute. So for the experienced All Blacks flanker, and 2020 captain, his mindset has quickly shifted to the final fortnight of this tour, by which time he hopes to be knocking loudly on the door of test selection.

But he hopes the next fortnight will nudge him close enough for the selectors to at least have something to think about ahead of that brutal finish against Ireland in Dublin (November 13) and France in Paris (November 20).

Weird, he wants/expects to be selected for the two most difficult tests on this tour, without playing in the two easier tests? He's seriously undercooked already; that won't change if he doesn't play. 🤔

Sam Cane is not that much better than Papalii. Don't want to see him against France at less than 100%.

I don't believe it's ever intentional. But when every team you play saves their best effort to try and topple you, if you aren't quite there mentally you run the risk of losing

I would struggle to find even one example of any AB team go out with the intention of taking it lightly because they think they have got it in the bag. The suggestion itself is laughable, our away record speaks for itself as does the pride the team have in the jersey..

Remember against Argentina last year, Ireland in Chicago and New South Wales County in 1992. All games that were assumed to be easy beforehand but were anytbing but.

We can be beaten regardless, I would still doubt it something they think they have in the bag. Did you really think Ireland was going to be easy in Chicago? I certainly didn't, I doubt the team did either, did we play our best? probably not, but i doubt it was just attributed too mentally not turning up as that also shows a lack of respect.

As for a dirt tracker team ..maybe I will agree with one there as half the team potentially on the piss as rugby wasn't professional then, but the others are a stretch in my book

I guess this means that Weber's injury is bad.

Great guy to call in, no half back better, but surely he won't be available for the Ireland test after just flying in.

I assume Smith's baby has been born as that was his reason for not touring initially.
