    This week in 90s nostalgia

    Varsity Blues

    Texas high school football

    So fucking 90s. So awesome.
Starring a veritable who's who of its time.

3.5 whipped cream bikinis out of 5 overbearing fathers

Maybe another half a point for a ripper soundtrack

Whilst doing a little search to see where I might find this movie, I will confess to getting sidetracked after punching in the "v" and the "a", and then spending a solid minute debating with myself whether I should keep going or just watch Van Wilder again...

Rewatched some classics over the last couple of weeks:

Tropic Thunder Iron Man and Short Reacher are magnificent.

    Unforgiven Clint's best Western.

Heat Fire and movement, and Ashley Judd.

Rambo III take's 45 minutes to get to any action. By far the worst of the franchise.

    John Wick

Wow. What a rush. I loved the style, the action was almost non stop once it kicked off, the violence was extreme like a video game. Keanu did great with more brooding and less dialogue. 5 dead puppies out of 5 dead Russian gangsters

    Unforgiven Clint's 4th or 5th best Western.

Heat Fire and movement, and Ashley Judd.

Fixed it with a slight edit.

Heat is absolutely magnificent though I’ll give you that

Many Russians are unhappy that they will once again have to suffer through fat American actors doing Russian accents.

    The Hitmans Wife’s Bodyguard-
Stupid fun with Samuel L J being Samuel L J, Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek jiggling her fun bags.
3.5 seatbelts out of 5 undersized bras

I watched this to break up my Best Oscar nominees watching with something to switch the brain off, agree with your comments but not your rating. Would drop 0.5 off the seatbelts. Hayek's cleavage was worth a whole 1 on their own too.

The Batman: I liked it, not as much as the fanbois, but the best Batman move (movie with Batman, the Lego movies aside) since The Dark Knight.

My main issue with it was it was two movies in one and one of them concluded which seemed like a good time to finish and then it carried on to finish the other movie. I was also underwhelmed by Dano's performance.

Pattinson, Kravitz, Wright, Farrell were all good, although not sure what was the point of having a completely unrecognisable Farrell, and Serkis was under used.

    3.4 out 5.

Just saw “Roadrunner.” Very good doc, and a sage cautionary tale for men: If you’re going to fall for a young woman, enjoy her body but stay in control and don’t let her manipulate and steal your brain. (The Jonathan Richman/Modern Lovers title track is awesome too.)

“Roadrunner,” by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, presents Bourdain as both the hero and the villain of his own story.

From that New Yorker article, this was weird, too. We’re going to be seeing and hearing lots more of this in documentaries, and it is a good ethical topic for conversation.

It wasn't his voice. But it was his words from an email he sent. People just seem to want to get outraged about anything

So, I've completed my annual Oscars Best Film nominations watch, here is my ranking of them from worst to best in case anyone is bored at work at the moment.

Licorice Pizza: As I noted earlier in the thread, I can’t stand this film. But @MiketheSnow said it better than I can:
Was hoping they all went off the cliff as the truck was freewheeling backwards.
I really disliked the performances of the two leads which doesn’t help. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love seem a long time ago now. 2/10

Power of the Dog: Well, the NZ scenery was nice, but not much of a movie, all style over substance. Sorry Jane. Cumberbatch did his best DDL, and also stars real life couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons (Landry from Friday Night Lights) so lots of method acting going on. 5/10

West Side Story: I’m a fan of live theatre musicals, but I’m not a fan of film versions. Saw this with my Mum over xmas break as she loves the original. Was ok, but it’s still a film version of a musical. 6/10

King Richard: Feel good movie, easy viewing but that’s about all. Will Smith was pretty decent playing a fairly annoying character. A good support cast of the two young actors playing Venus and Serenda and John Berenthal as a tennis coach. 6.5/10

Don’t Look Up: Not as good as The Big Short, but still a fun-ish black comedy with some big stars. The credit sequence on the new planet had me in hysterics. Meryl Streep was hilarious as lady Trump and Leo and Jennifer Lawrence play scientists. 7/10

Nightmare Alley: This was the nominee I was least looking forward to as I thought it was a horror and the fish fucking movie put me off Del Toro. Anyway, it’s not a horror and there's no fish fucking. It’s actually a good drama-thriller. Was a little bit predictable in parts but the design of the film and cinematography is great. Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Willem Defoe, and Rooney Mara star. 7/10

Drive My Car: A three-hour Japanese movie about staging a play – kind of. I really did not expect to like this and set aside three separate times to watch. I watched it in one sitting and it was weirdly interesting. Some Japanese, Korean, Chinese-American etc people star. 8/10

Dune: Great version from Villinenue which did really well so the second movie is being made. Thankfully! Timothy Chalemet, Oscar Issac and Jason Momoa were all good. 8.5/10

Belfast: A movie about the Troubles that some might find schmaltzy, but I didn’t think it was. Directed by Branagh and partially based on his childhood. I think that either this or The Power of the Dog will win the Oscar. I hope it’s this. Jamie Dornan was good as the Dad and Ciarn Hinds was a crack up as the grandfather. 8.5/10

Coda: Kind of crazy that a movie from early in 2021 and released on AppleTV+ has received a best picture nomination. This is my favourite of the nominees. Was much funnier than you’d expect for a movie about the issues of growing up hearing in an all deaf family. Sign swearing is a crack up. Wont win anything and it was B/S it didn't receive a best actress nomination. 9/10
