Agree. Both will be in the Māori squad. Ainsley started the season well but his form fell away a little in the back half. We didn't see as much of him running with the ball, which was his strength.

Maori front row will be ok won't it? Tamaiti Williams, Lomax Ainsley (forgot he was Maori) and Ollie Norris? I looking forward to seeing that team named, and am going up to Hamilton for first game!! Yeehaa!!

    Also Rakete-Stones and maybe Renata.

      Interesting stat, amongst others.

All bar one of New Zealand’s 14 provincial unions from the NPC are represented.
The odd one out? Southland. And the Stags would have gone close, too, with prop Ethan de Groot, who played four tests last year, one of the unlucky omissions.

Taranaki has the most representation, with seven players, followed by Ta$man, with five.

Hard to disagree with this. Add Lomax to the list.

I wouldn’t have Perenara or Robinson in the unlucky camp.

The writers attempt to link Perenara’s dropping to last years tests misses the point that his form has not been great for 2 years and I don’t think his Super performances this year showed any sign of it returning to his peak of 3-4 years ago.

As for Robinson, in my opinion it’s just a case of him being behind Scott Barrett and Vaa’i.

@ACT-Crusader add Cullen Grace and Alex Hodgman to that list.

          🤣

Are you on drugs ? ...do you even realize a 7 should be a fetcher, an openside has to have the pace to link up with the backs, especially with the speed the ABs play, that isn't Papalii, he's too slow for the position & weighs about 115kg, which is why he's better suited to 6 or 8.

Maybe you should change your name to OZbloke and you can go hang out with Phil Waugh, David Pocock and Michael Hooper

I think Papali’i will be fine. His game is pretty similar to Cane’s.

Foster said they're keen to use Papalii on the blindside, I bet that was Schmidt's idea, not his... Papallii has never had the pace to be a link player at 7, which is a pretty big factor in the ABs playing a fast paced game.

Well as Foster talked about it last year, I not sure where you got that idea from.

For starters Fosters has stuff all insight & he played Papalii at 7 last year, so hardly surprising what I said.

It was very surprising that you think Papalii doesn't have the required pace.
Also that you think that a selector who isn't in the inner circle yet has influenced the head coach into a complete mind change.

He's 5cm taller than McCaw was and 5 kg heavier. Sounds about right for a good 7 to me.

As for speed, the best skill of a 7 is smart running lines and foresight. DP is very good at taking the shortest route to a breakdown or link that hasn't happened yet. Again a skill the great one had.

Yep One of Ritchies great strengths running the best lines to support the ball carrier, hit the ruck or make the tackle,He had great vision for a 7.As he said once in an interview its all about getting to the target as quick as he could using the right lines and angles not really pace but smarts.

When DP started a game for CM at ITM level this aspect of his game was laid bare for all to marvel at. He was seemingly everywhere at once.
Stephen Luatua was another that developed this part of his game and partly why he was such a valuable addition to the Bristol Bears.
A side effect of this ability is the value it brings to captaincy. If your players are looking to you they see this 'involvement' and feed off it.
One of the criticisms last year about Blackadder was that he was charging around everywhere like a fly in a jar. I think this year he had tidied that up quite a bit and was working much smarter.
In short, it's not all about speed.

Agree. Both will be in the Māori squad. Ainsley started the season well but his form fell away a little in the back half. We didn't see as much of him running with the ball, which was his strength.

i think we've established thats actually the criteria for making the squad

PGS is a good example of that .

Papallii has never had the pace to be a link player at 7

Never gets old. Watch that young fella in 7
