I was certainly in the IWL bandwagon earlier this year but Dominic Bird has been outstanding in September and October. Nothing flashy but his cleaning in the rucks has allowed the Lions to get quick ball. During the final, his support of Lakai when he took out two Cantab defenders, was just delightful. He thus allowed Asafo Aumua to score his try. His presence is also a major factor in the way the Lions scrum held its own against teams with a higher reputation in this domain.
Sangster has been outstanding too but could remain behind Blackwell who is one of Holland's favorite.

With Alex Fidow announcing that he’s moving on from the Canes and other players rumoured to be leaving, who do the Hurricanes need to sign to make them a genuine title threat in 2023?

Those that have signed for next year already are: (rumours that Prinsep may head off early)

      Signed for 2023:

      • Owen Franks
      • Tyrel Lomax
      • Xavier Numia
      • Asafo Aumua
      • Dane Coles
      • Ardie Savea
      • James Blackwell
      • Du Plessis Kirifi
      • Reed Prinsep
      • TJ Perenara
      • Bailyn Sullivan
      • Julian Savea
      • Salesi Rayasi
      • Ruben Love

@Canes4life Again? They've had a few preseason games in Levin. I wonder if they're going to completely ignore Hawke's Bay again. Last year, they had excuse. This season, none at all.

Don’t Horowhenua have a big stake in the Canes? Maybe that’s why?

I’ll most likely head along. I went to the last one played there a few years ago before COVID came along.

TJ Perenara pretty much gone for the Super season. Big opportunity for Cam Roigard to get plenty of minutes in 2022, and potentially an opportunity for Richard Judd.

Who's likely to fill the gap?

@Canes4life Disappointing for TJP and the Canes. Injuries suck for both players and teams!

So the Canes need someone to be the 3rd halfback behind Roigard and Booth. So many of NZ depth going overseas to the MLR and Japan makes it more difficult to find good back-up.

Looking at halfbacks from the region without a SR contract, Richard Judd, Luke Campbell and Connor McLeod (who is only the 3rd hb for the Magpies, so probably wouldn't be picked anyway) are all off to the USA. Judd would have been the player to get a call-up if he'd been available.

All others will be a step down, but there aren't too many options. Lisati Milo-Harris (Northland) may be available; he has SR experience. Liam Blyde (Taranaki) looked handy during the NPC. Then there's ex-Wellington, now Otago, Kemara Hauiti-Parapara, who got a lot of game time during the NPC.

The best halfback from the NZ U20s, Hotham, is taken. I don't think the others are ready? Adam Lennox was behind Blyde for Taranaki.

Off the Hurricanes U20 halfbacks, Jordie Viljoen is a great talent and he played well for NZ U19s, but he's too young.

It will be interesting who'll get the call-up. I think I'd go with Blyde, but I probably missed some other available players.

I've got a feeling Luke Campbell signed overseas. There's also Logan Henry who made his debut last season, I'm pretty sure he will be hanging around somewhere. I would probably go with Richard Judd, he was solid without being spectacular in the NPC but has plenty of experience which we may need now.

Logan Henry would probably be the guy then I'd say considering he's been around the squad. I don't rate him too highly either.

Not a bad call, is he a halfback?

@Canes4life Didn't you watch NPC? He was the BOP halfback.

Wasn't he playing on the wing? I know Carter played for the Canes in pre-season last year but just couldn't remember what position.

@Canes4life Yeah, you're right. He played on the wing in the finals where his sevens experience was very useful. He was only available after sevens had finished so he only played one regular season game. At halfback.

I’d certainly prefer him over Henry.

TJ Perenara pretty much gone for the Super season. Big opportunity for Cam Roigard to get plenty of minutes in 2022, and potentially an opportunity for Richard Judd.

Who's likely to fill the gap?

@Nepia I will come to the defence of @Canes4life here. He has stopped fluffing Alex Fidow (and to a leser extent Xavier Numia) for about 18 months now. Whether that is because he no longer falls into the young Wellington players category or he has finally accepted and agreed with me that Mr. Fidow will never master the arts for propping to be effective at any level over Premier Reserve club level (Ories don't always start him at prop).

Where’s Fidow off to? I know he’s playing Harbour in NPC but is he off overseas after that? Still v.young and might round out his game with a stint in Europe for a few years.

@TheMojoman not sure if this has already been posted but he's turned up at Souths Logan Magpies! Probably on a train and trial deal with either the Broncos, Titans or Dolphins ?

Might be able to hold his own in scrums in that sport!
