Yes, same principle applies. I get that legislation and enforcement was considered necessary to adjust behaviour at the time, but laws shouldn't exist to prevent people from making decisions that impact themselves the most.
That’s the problem with assessing an individual right of choice. The impact on society and their “right” to not have to clean up after your stupidity.
Well, that's their choice of employment isn't it?
But in NZ at least we have a “Your rights, my consequences” situation where ACC pays out of the public purse, for the rest of their life if necessary, based on the outcomes of their decisions.
I’ve known a couple of people who have vegetabled themselves, one of them 40 years ago and we’re still paying for the

Yeah I will always wear one. Full faced one too. I fell off once and my helmet away scraped like hell at the front. That would have been my face if I had an open faced helmet on. Not to mention all the bugs that would be hitting ya face.
When I was much younger I t-boned a motorcyclist when I was on a push bike. He had an open faced helmet and it was his face that brought him to a stop. Not pretty even at really low speed. It had a lasting impact on me.
I find it interesting that you hold the same position on this as a mate of mine who was also a cop: Shouldn't be illegal, but stupid if you don't.
Yeah when I was a teen riding a twist n go, I was going a bit fast in a parking lot when a lady pulled out, saw me and froze. Went over the bonnet and landed on the other side, mid flip - fair to say I probably would have been bald now if I didn't have a helmet.

I still cringe at the memory of my Bowen St - Lambton Quay "hang-off-the-bike-and-look-cool-oh-fuck-the front-tyre-is-going" extravaganza way back when.....
