Which is what this upgrade is designed to fix. Matching stands on the sides then the ends.
It's a good stadium, comically easy to get to, pretty user friendly IMO. Short walk after parking for free, or a train straight to it or you can walk easily from the top of Queen Street.
@Kirwan I understand that this is the 'fix'. But comically easy to get to is the cake tin, Eden Park is average on a full crowd. I am not anti any of these proposals, love to see an improved EP or an awesome new one. I just can't see any happening in the current economic environment

Yeah, disagree. It's easy to get to Eden Park. And the atmosphere is great.
2018 NPC Final, huge storm, crowd was having a ball, super loud party atmosphere. Can list off plenty of other examples.

i have to falling into its not the best location camp, compared to other big stadiums, MCG/AAMI, Caketin, cardiff...those are great, actual dedicated large pedestrian paths back to the closest CBD or at least far enough away from the stadium to disperse the crowds a bit, with eden park you walk out onto residential streets....

The AAMI, MCG, Melbourne Park precinct is brilliant. Just a shame the Auckland council of the day missed a massive trick pre-RWC2011 and failed to build at the waterfront. Bloody politicians, letting politics get in the way of a real legacy project

Definitely never walked into town from a concert at Mt Smart. And EP will never get to have lots of events because of the militant residents association. But the walk into town from Spark is much easier

Me too, the Carlaw Park option ticked the location boxes, just needed to rip up a little bit of the domain to do it. This way they are using essentially dead land right next to Auckland's premier indoor entertainment venue. But sounds like the councillors didn't want to support Goff, and they were balls deep with the EP trust

Me too, the Carlaw Park option ticked the location boxes, just needed to rip up a little bit of the domain to do it. This way they are using essentially dead land right next to Auckland's premier indoor entertainment venue. But sounds like the councillors didn't want to support Goff, and they were balls deep with the EP trust
@canefan i liked the idea of it being an existing ground too, bit of history etc, my company has their office in where carlaw park was....weird little area

Why not eat and drink in Kingsland or Mt Eden? They have great options. Have done the journey between Queen St and Eden Park a few times too and to Ponsonby Rd. All much better than the cbd options from Vector in my view

The chance to relocate the main stadium in Auckland was missed before the RWC, and instead they upgraded Eden Park. Turning around and deciding to build one on the waterfront now would be pretty crazy.
I do like the idea of a slightly more central stadium, but at the same time, Eden Park is a fantastic facility, so it feels like they're trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist.

I argue the crowds would vastly improve if the stadium is centrally located at a site with probably the best location transport-wise in the entire country (Quay Park) and literally a stone's throw from the CBD with all the restaurants and bars imaginable - Parnell as well. Improved crowds make more money for the tenants at the stadium, including the rugby unions. It doesn't even have to be paid for by public money. The waterfront proposals can be fully or mostly privately funded with a little bit of brain-power and a little less sectarian interests.
The problem is Mike Lee and his Eden Park fanatics remain on Council.

both pretty small areas for +60k people to go too, its also things like hotels and stuff for visiting fans. im not saying there arent options...there are just lots of stadiums around the world that do these things better, even big ones around the world that arent in a central location....but have hectares of parking around them

another thing i dont hear mentioned much but the surveyor in me cant ignore it...at a guess i think you could get 300-350 freehold lots (more if we were talking medium to high density units), how much would that raise given its such an expensive area to live? $500k a lot? thats over $150M towards the coffers...and if you were looking at a stadium that at least partially spanned the rail track and so didn't need to be purchased....

The waterfront stadium spokesman has explained their updated thinking.
Summary:
- Context: new mayor in town who wants to move the port off the waterfront within a decade
- Basically same idea as before but with Eden Park Trust Board moving to the waterfront & essentially owning the waterfront stadium
- $9 billion cost all up (including selling off Eden Park land for housing) to be raised privately
- International developer likely to win tender as nobody in NZ has this kind of money
- Enough money left over ($120 million) to build a purpose-built cricket stadium somewhere in Auckland. No room for cricket at the waterfront.

I’ve been to countless sell outs and either drive and walk for 20 minutes or go to a local (to me) bar grab a feed and a few drinks and jump on one of an endless stream of free buses that take me stray to the ground
There’s plenty wrong with EP but imo the access issues are massively over stated
Twickenham. There’s an asshole of a place to get to. Or Wembley for that matter

Fulhams Craven Cottage is a ‘jumbled mess’ but is still consistently* voted one of the best football grounds in Europe.
Despite some rank poor facilities
- by consistently I mean I’ve seen at least three polls that have it in top half dozen

If a new stadium is used for concerts and rugby/league/football IMHO it makes more sense than EP which will never be allowed to have lots of concerts, and Mt Smart which is a nice shaped ground with no limit on concerts, but in a bad location

Part of the reason they've been allowed concerts recently was the changes to the eastern stand. The larger screen also added a structure decrease the noise leakage
Stage one of the new four stage plan is to build larger eastern and western stands. This will significantly change the amount of sound leaking out

One thing I’ll say about that waterfront “sunken” stadium proposal is that these steps leading into the harbour are gold. It would be a great lunch spot. CBD workers would be swarming all over this public space every day. Also, a great place to host waka ama/sailing regattas and triathlons. The crowds would be great.

@dogmeat North Shore / Pakuranga but anywhere where a car is required. Parking is a big hassle and if coming from those areas on public transport, well forget about it.

Have you ever been to a match there?? Never had a problem parking near Eden Park when driving from Tauranga. Had plenty of problems when going to Vector Arena or Stanley St though.
Amazing to see below sea level plans with our supposed tsunami and sea rise issues....
