I'm certain their misgivings are about his defence.

He was def. considered for this Test and has impressed:

“He featured in discussion and we decided to go somewhere else,” Foster told reporters in Mendoza. “I’ve been impressed with Shaun since he’s come in. Sometimes it’s good for people to come in and get a feel for the space and to learn.

“I think he’s doing everything we’re asking from him and that’s all we can really ask of all our squad members; to really enjoy being here and train hard and he’s done that and he’s done everything we’ve asked of him so did he feature in the conversation? Yes, he did.”

That may or may not be true because he is hardly going to say the opposite. We need to take statements like that (from anybody) with a grain salt.

@Crazy-Horse when Henry/Hansen (less late Hansen) used to say it, and I disagreed, I trusted their decision making more, they had the results to back up thier decisions, Foster doesnt.

Sure he has a had a poor record, alot will largely get forgotten if he pulls off the RWC, but for that, he needs to be bold, nothing here screams bold.

.but what tried and tested combos has he gone with?

      Ardie/Cane/Frizzel, De Groot/Coles/Lomax, BB/CC/RI.

If Telea or Jordan were fully fit and he'd picked Mo'unga at 10 instead of the form SR 10 it would be a pretty experienced & settled team. The exception is Lord at 5 and the lack of cover for 12 on the bench - so he's rolled the dice there a bit.

Not sure the 11/10/13 axis is traditionally considered a “combo”…

This might be CC & BB drinking in the Last Chance Saloon - haven't been impressed with either in SR or in 2022 and BB's kicking is shit. Much prefer to have a fit Jordan or confident SS at 15.

But as someone mentioned above, Foster wasn't going to throw a whole bunch of newbies in against Argentina in the 1st Test of the season when the AB's are normally rusty.

I'm not sure throwing in a bunch of rusty players instead is the answer.

After this test there's 3 tests left before naming the RWC squad in which time ABs will have to find out about Finau, T Williams, Stevenson, Roigard & McLeod and that's only the rookies (plus I imagine Narawa will get more than 1 opportunity).

Jeez I can't believe how some people believe what Foster is saying. Post 2019 'we need to front up' picks same front row shit until injuries force change. We def considered SS, but decided to instead pick someone who's last good game was back in 2016 - so much dry powder

I can see the ABs being whitewashed in this RC. They will face a fresh SA team whose major players won't be affected by the jet lag then an on fire Australian team, galvanized by Eddie Jones.

Well I'll go against the grain and say I really like that backline. The only change I'd make for the RWC is Jordan at 14 when he's fit. Very happy to see them giving DMac some time at 10, and excited to see what he can do with Jordie and Rieko outside him. I hope he really challenges Mo'unga for the starting 10 slot.

BB at the back is purely an experience thing, he will be there to help organise the backline, particularly on defense which I suspect is what they are wanting SS to do more. Agree with others that I wouldn't start him at 10 anymore, but he's still very effective from 15.

On the bench, we'd have ALB there if he wasn't suspended. Would like to see Roigard there but he is very green still.

The forwards I am less convinced by. Would prefer Dalton starting at 7, though Cane has played well enough this year to keep his spot. Frizell I just do not understand at all and I don't think I ever will. Playing him repeatedly does not solve any of our problems at 6.

@Stargazer is right I think when he said some selections are about giving players from the final another week off.

Gives the fern an opportunity to talk up Akira Ioane ?

Yeah I’m seriously scratching my head by this. For a country that historically has test class players growing on trees the drop down since Kaino has retired has been baffling.

Is it that hard to find a big, scary, skilled munter to fill the void ?

Someone should give Troy Flavell a call, he looked in great shape on that Match fit show a couple of years back.

@Machpants who wants a player that can do that as well as link extremely well with those around him, plus chase the kick? Yuck no

He better add some muscle to his game.

Otherwise pretty Vaai for a light guy.

Admittedly I didn't watch a great deal of Super rugby this year bar the finals, but I feel like the legend of SS grows by the day. We'll be at Ngatai levels soon if they don't pick him for the next test.

LOL what? Ngatai was good at SR (and never great - which is the ironic point of the Maori Jesus joke), SS is the best player this year. Full stop. The guy in his jersey is someone playing on the fact he was great last decade
