Don't like being negative but have felt frustration for taking so long to get Jordie, Samisoni and Roigard in their rightful positions.
WJ should have had a decent go at 15 too. If this had happened in good time we would all be the wiser. It's too late now for this year.
The standout first five of SR hasn't had a decent run either

TBF, with Jordie it kinda made sense as he was easily the outstanding FB in '21 and had played little 12 at SR.

Samisoni I just don't get. Is there something in training that Ryan is seeing and we aren't?

Maybe has an injury? They don't like to share much of that info.

Ardie just said that the Ireland V SA game was one of the first non ABs games he has watched.

What a professional outfit we have here, one of our most senior players and stand in captain is not even bothered to see where the opposition is at. Sigh.

I think he meant for this world Cup FFS

I'd go for Leicester, but I think that's what foster will do, if it happens. Or Clarke 🤮

@Dan54 guess the difference is CT got numerous chances to play back into form after an average super season, ST doesn't seem to have been afforded the same opportunity

Could be mate, but I didn't actually think ST went really well in super, he was good but CT looked better all season. I still think ST doesn't really scare the big boys, like Boks etc. Don't get me wrong I am a fan of his, but just think at moment CT/DC maybe seen as a better option at scrum and lineout time.

              @Dan54

ST had a pretty good super rugby season.

I’m sure the big boys are far less scared of Codie Taylor mate!

Although he had a pretty good RC but we need him to really step up now. He has been an AB for 10 years now so if he starts he really needs to prove he is worthy of the starter jersey.

@Dan54 I'm talking previous years when CT was poor, but kept getting chances.

I don't think any players are scared of anyone, but I wager ST is a.sight tougher to bring down.

Anywhoo, it's done now, time to deal to some Italians.

There will be a high of 30 degrees tomorrow in Lyon. I’m amazed it is still that hot at this time of year (UK feels like autumn already!)

I hope this doesn’t lead Fozzie into overuse of a kicking game to preserve players.

While on paper we should beat Italy comfortably, we know world cups are different and I believe Italy will have been targeting this game for some time.

They have improved a lot of the last year and will love the opportunity of a knockout match against the All Blacks.

I want to see us tighten our game up, play direct with ball in hand, kick well but not just for the sake of it and put down a marker to show that they are capable of going deep in this tournament.

Discipline needs to be spot on as this ref could blow us off the park if we are not at our best and a red card could mean the end of our World Cup.

There is an article on the herald stating the ABs are being ignored with no one turning up to press conferences etc and are literally not regarded as a threat. I want to see that change by tomorrow night.

Foster has always preferred Taylor, even when it was blindingly obvious that he was playing terribly and Samisoni was playing great. IIRC he dropped Samisoni despite being our best forward for the Irish decider, then continued using Taylor while our lineout and his general play was dogshit all last season. Taylor is a decent player, but his form last year was arguably the worst I've seen an AB get away with and keep being selected - and that's not when the cupboard was bare, but when we had another option who was clearly better. It is just shit selection.
Samisoni should be a bolted on starter by now. Taylor or Coles should be the bench guy, or if we were better at handling young players, Aumua could have been ready in time.
We all sit around bemoaning Super rugby and our lack of grunt up front - and we have that guy right fucking there and they won't fucking pick him!

I agree with the many posters hoping to see a more direct game.

Given Matt Carly is ref - the stars are aligned for the ABs to stumble , fall foul of the officials etc., ill-discipline will be costly - not just for this match .. I hope the ABs don't stumble over this banana peel of a game -

All I want is some simple disciplined rugby, play for territory, value and contest possessions, strong defense and put some doubt in the minds of those who have already written the ABs off........ (Please no Foster and BB hold my beer moments)

O'Gara thinks the ABs can "surprise people and go all the way" if they are "more aggressive with their 'D'". So he obviously thinks the standard of cattle is good enough 😉 Given he has experienced NZ rugby, he knows the quality NZ possess. The quip about the 'D' is a dig towards the coaches. I remember he had similar conversations with Robertson and the Crusaders players in his time there about moving them away from man-watching to ball-watching.

Italy will set out to play defensively, we know that. They won't do anything risky, until maybe at the end if they are chasing the game.

If Italy kick to Beauden Barrett repeatedly, they might win the kicking duel, which will leave the ABs with poor field position, and then hope for penalties.

We might try taking it up the guts, but we have recently had a tendency to drop the ball when we do that. If we crab across field, then yuck. We might kick for position, but that has never really been a Foster strategy.

So it will come down to whether our scrum and lineout will hold up. If they fail, it will be hard going.

I expect the ABs to win, but we have really struggled in recent years when teams have defended stubbornly. We will rely, as ever, on individual brilliance.

The closer the game is the more concerned I am about it. Not sure why as it should be a comfortable win for us but I just have a nagging feeling about this game for some reason.

I want to see that change by tomorrow night.

stats show kicking is a big part of games in recent times, which I thnk we are in line with others, its just the amount of times we fuck around in our own 22 and/or half with short kicks that creates undue pressure on ourselves.

As I have said, kick and chase game being improved will help immensely, harder to fix though is our discipline, this aspect will be more crucial against tougher opposition, but lest start by improving drastically v Italy

The closer the game is the more concerned I am about it. Not sure why as it should be a comfortable win for us but I just have a nagging feeling about this game for some reason.

Foster said that statistic meant nothing ahead of Friday’s clash.

“History means nothing,” he added. “History is yesterday’s newspaper, isn’t it, not tomorrow’s.”
