For Laulala to be a decent All Black he’d basically need to be the best scrummager in the world because his work around the field is absolutely diabolical.

He got stood up bad in one try that I saw in the highlights.

Yes I saw that it was a shocker, certainly did not look like an All Black prop, more like a tired club prop out of his depth at first class level, struggling to keep up with play.

You should do a poll on this: how many of us is this? Describes me in a nutshell

Widen the poll by not restricting it to props.

Got a question for you all. You know we have the hooker using the 'brake foot' , could we do similar with props? Actually make them hold it too, so always packed with one foot in front of other, I just wonder if it would stop a lot of collapses, props would pack a little higher I know, but may stop feet slipping out etc.

@Dan54 pretty sure that the set process the way Cron used to coach started with a split stance and only once they engage when both feet go back.

Obviously a hooker is largely reliant on his props stability to allow him to hook, however, given how the 9s pretty much throw the ball under the locks feet now, the hooker isnt losing much power waiting for the hook on one foot.

Yep taniwhai, I just wonder if props can be made to hold it, so we don't get the probelm when they put foot back and slip out. Would mean staying slightly higher and making sure they learn to straighten back while hips are well bent, might be dumb idea too, just a thought.

@Dan54 Don't know anything about the dynamics, Dan - but one thing I'd imagine could be a worry is blowing a prop's knee when the weight comes on as they shift the brake foot back.

@Dan54 all I'd say is split squats are harder in terms of balance and doing less weight than a standard squat with a square stance, so while your stance wouldnt be as wide as a split squat, I'd say it likely wouldnt be as stable as a square stance, although likely de-powered, if all the props were doing it...

Yep mate, just a thought I had, I was thinking they should perhaps have to keep brake foor there, just trying to think how we can stop them getting too low, the keeping shoulders above hips is perhaps one of problems as they have feet so far back to keep hips low I think we getting some slipping. I not really advocating we go to it and just thought I would ask other's opinions, which I kind of helps me undertand why perhaps it not looked at.

Stumbled across this thread, whilst looking for the one on Will's try-scoring - which is an interesting re-read given there's quite a lot of focus on props this week. Quite a lot of wrongness in this thread - though the injuries to Bower and Moody haven't helped. 🙂

Anyway, after my re-read - I'm pretty set that our starting front row should be de Groot, Taylor, Lomax (woo hoo) - and the bench should be Williams, Coles and Newell (I don't mind if they play Sami, I don't think they will though - Coles' experience will trump him).

My other quandary is whether they should start Sam Whitelock and bring Brodie off the bench again. I don't think this was the plan (I think they "rested" BBBR vs the Argies). But, given the traction the English got vs the Bok lineout and the faith they have in their bomb squad, maybe it makes sense to have our lineout ace starting and our grunt machine coming on later to help nullify the bombers.

Though, actually, with Marx gone and Rassie reverting to five bench forwards in the last couple of games, the squad is not looking enormously fearsome. Bongi looks like he'll have to play close to 80 minutes and I reckon we might be able to exploit that. I also noted he was getting strapping for a thigh or hammy around the 70 minute mark vs England, so potentially another concern for the boks.

Will be very interesting to see how they structure their team this week.

I'm inclined to think they'll start Faf and Handre. Libbok may not even make the bench - I'm guessing 6 forwards.

is it time to revisit these predictions of Lomax et al?
