Ardie nails it in the post match comments. Need to bring that first half effort every week.

A speech I've heard time and again from about 2019

It’s like this generation of players can’t stick to a game plan for 80 mins. Instead we loosen up and play rugby with lots of kicking in attacking situations. If I was coach I would be pissed.

ABs used to drop off in the second half even in the Carter/McCaw days.

Game was over at halftime and we used the second half to give guys a run and try some things

And the reason why we haven’t won the last two world cups. We have to find a way to get better against a Bok team that is big a physical and will execute their game plan for 80 mins.

The first 40 minutes is where we lost the last two world cups

2019 we got physically blown away in the first half and were behind the 8 ball

2023 we got 2 cards in the first 40

    Cracks successfully papered over.

Some good performances, but not much there that will worry the Saffers. Good result, but I'm not convinced Argentina really showed up. Two monster games coming up over there - that'll show us where we are

This may have been mentioned but we didn't look like scoring a try after DMac was subbed. BB at 1st 5 and Jordan at fullback was hardly a success.

    Jordan is not a fullback.

A bullshit RC and two missed kicks you'd normally bank is hardly a compelling argument that we can't play for 80mins.

TJP is an enigmatic player. Much better performance in fairly average conditions. And I don't think there's another halfback who could've set up Jordan for that try.

But in dry weather we need faster service from rucks.

Yeah he’s a very good wet weather halfback but I agree we need more speed from the ruck in the dry.

I don’t think the Boks are supermen but they will scrum, kick, chase, tackle for 80 mins. They just grind you down. We can’t be giving them that much time in the 22 or throwing away possession with soft options on attack.

Yeah, I agree. But we really poor for 40 mins today. And should call it for what it was.

I'm prepared to cut them some slack as the squad has to develop together. But you're right that there were some frustratingly dumb decisions made by individuals that put the team under pressure.

    @Bones

It's meant to be a scrum, a backline and a five: two split bench.

And apparently the Springboks are unbeatable at home.

Good first half, it was great to see some intelligent kicking - both long and short.
Shoulda left McKenzie on, no direction after that.

Williams looked the part, and Ofa wasn't great - so I think he becomes the bench option for me.
Taylor played well; Aumua so powerful, shame about the soft yellow.
Tupou Vaai was good eh? Best test I remember from him, and Darry good again.
Blackadder was good again. A few more on here now thinking that he deserves his spot in the squad after that I'd hope.
Savea was pretty good again finally, thank fuck.
I don't see why you need Cane if you have Dalton - or vice versa I suppose - but Cane is not the future.
TJP amazing offload for the Jordan try. Remains a great rugby player and a mediocre halfback.
McKenzie is at the heart of almost everything good we do.
JB much improved. RI only okay. ALB looking pretty sharp again.
Wingers looked better, but then they ought to behind a vastly better team performance.
Beauden okay at fullback and horrible at 10. Nothing new there. Interesting to see JB dropping back at times, which is a good tactic to compete better in the forceback.

Oh, the 'where are the Ardie highlights reel guys?' question. Well speaking for myself, watching the game instead of posting parochial shit is where I was. I actually thought the game provided a nice example of the criticism: watch him bump 3 people off early on. It's a really powerful run, impressive, 'beast mode' - straight to the highlights package that run for sure. What the highlights won't show is that the outcome was that he turned the ball over by running away from his support and getting bundled into touch. Feels a bit churlish to finish on that note given how well he played, but fuck it it's not like i'm structuring an essay here.

I was screaming for him to pass to Jordan who was unmarked, I think "stupid hungus" was the phrase.

Honestly, I'm more impressed that he managed more than 2 games without getting injured.
