Re DMac, I don’t remember if it was him but one of our knock ons was shown in the replay to have been punched out of his arms from behind by Farrell. Is that a penalty? My memory tells me it used to be.

DMac has had bad luck with that this year - he probably would have scored against the Boks if not for a direct hand hitting the ball and we probably would have scored in a phase if not for this one.

DMac is a punching bag for some on here but those were both just unlucky (or awesome skill by the defender both times).

He need not fear though because he will always have you and Crucial fluffing...

🤣 We're at baby levels compared with your master class of fluffing ... anything in red'n'black.

The penalty wasn’t even for Hadens dive.

Yes, but Oliver was diving too, he was much less enthusiastic about it and he just had the fortune to actually get fouled.

It may have been a penalty anyway. But it was also a pre-meditated cheat. We tend to laugh it off but I think the criticism is fair, it was an unsporting act.

Very late report from Dublin hotel. Quick chat last night to Joe Schmidt, who seems quietly confident.

Had seats with other NZ fans in the rafters behind South Stand. Amazing lateral view, which gives a totally different perspective from TV pictures.

Unexpected to find myself applauding English play in first 30, when it was bucketing...

After BBBR shells kick off, England make simple, safe, passes making a few yards each time, get close and run a decoy move to leave Ashton unmarked. He dives early to ensure try certain.

Whereas our tactical kicking was inaccurate and seemed to involve Benda making miraculous recoveries in such conditions, Poms were excellent. Young's box kick landing three metres in from touch. Runners make no attempt to catch, but know AB receiver will be vulnerable to a strong tackle on landing and can easily be bundled into touch. Thirty metres gain and put in to lineout.

Pressure on our lineout, leading to Taylor overthrow.

As they recovered ball from our kick off and AB defence hanging back to resist big runners, OF drops in to pocket for easy droppie. Three points and means ABs have to guard an extra threat next time.

Good use of touchline as extra defender. Even Benda forced out when getting within 5m of touch as very slippery.

    15-0 was entirely deserved.

In contrast, ABs tried to shift ball as if it were dry. A pragmatic approach needed in the conditions.

Kicking too optimistic, and ill directed. When we get penalty BB kicks for distance, and although crosses line of touch low enough to be pulled back into play under new laws. In contrast 5m shorter and we have lineout in their 22, at a time here we desperately needed to get some momentum.

Some observations, some of which I'm sure have already been made.

Crotty coming on was pivotal. Not that SBW was that bad. Main thing was Crotty's 'grey hair' allowed him to settle BB down and play the percentages, something which SBW can't bring. Also Crotty kept it simple. In the conditions good lines and hard running paid lots of dividends. No need for the fancy dan plays.

Which brings me on to Josh Goodhue. Sitting high behind the posts I could appreciate just what good lines he ran in first half. Very Conradesque. Not given proper credit. The try was a direct result of him running a brilliant line and getting many yards up to their 22, from which point others did their part.

Not reported, but the rain stopped after 30ish and the ABs (with Crotty) were a different team. Secure handling, fast ball and the Poms were right under the pump.

Likewise, rain started to lash again in last 15 or so at which point England much more dangerous.

Not sure picked up here but Itoje said in press that when Barrett (S) came on ABs shifted from zonal lineout defence to man for man. Poms never came to grips with that. BBBR owned them, although why they kept throwing to Itoje is beyond me.

One last thought -- with today's refs you don't ever want to be within seven in last five. Had Ardie and Aaron executed that try in third quarter, TJP chargedown would have been of academic interest. Big kick up RRRs for the two As.

I voted for Hemopo and Mo'unga, with Coles, Bridge, Laumape, Evans, and Proctor in reserve.

I wrote down some thoughts about someone who definitely wasn't MOTM here:

    http://www.thesilverfern.com/2018/11/05/abs-versus-japan-how-was-fifita/

Some players just struggle to find their role at higher levels. We've seen plenty in the past and will see more yet.
I think Hansen has previously been quoted as saying that sometimes they select coals and give them a squeeze to see if they will produce a diamond. In other words...they take a punt based on athletic ability (Fifita), size (Bird) or promise (Goodhue, ALB, DMac).
In most cases they give the player a fair shot after observing them then providing feedback. If that doesn't work then they have a long road back.
There is no doubt that Fifita is an athletic talent. He has just struggled to transfer what he can achieve with that to higher level rugby.
I suspect that this is, in part, some of the reason for holding Akira back. The Fifita fast tracking failed and the backup is to give Akira as long as possible to learn his trade. I think when Akira finally makes an appearance in the ABs he will be vastly better prepared for the level.

@cgrant 100% agree. We will watch that game in four or five years time to remind us how good a player Ben Smith was.

BFA is not the biggest, not the quickest, but makes up for it with speed of thought, outstanding technique and determination. Surely a key part of the All Blacks side through to RWC 2019 if he stays fit

BFA looks to be in a similar mode to DC heading into his last RWC. All the ability, skill and knowledge to get there without busting a gut. When required will be able to still change up and play an absolute blinder.

Without getting too mn5, he looks to be in bloody good physical condition.

    that is delicious!!

We're not shit, we just don't cheat like they do!!

I always enjoy a "let's look at one team" breakdown of all the "illegalities" they get away with. It just means your team won. Again.

Time to scrap the 3 tests against Australia, they just don't deserve it.

What is more concerning is Phil Kearns saying that he AND World Rugby are sick of the Referees giving the All Blacks a free ride! Who at World Rugby has been making these comments, have they been made public?? Maybe Gosper said it to Phil when in Australia a few weeks back??

I can imagine Kearns chewing Gosper's ear and saying 'those fucking All Blacks get the rub of the green every time don't they?'
'Yeah, yeah Phil. Now where are those mini hot pies, they were nice'
Kearns turns to Kafer, 'See, even WR thinks it's a major problem'

Gosper really does look like a cartoonist's caricature of a 1980s Wall St CEO

Ardie 1st, then Mounga and finally went with Ioane.

Sorry @ploughboy I respectfully disagree. Ardie came in and really put his head down and hit rucks (something he was accused previously as a "leaner"). He was shifting bodies and making tackles. 3 turn overs with 2 of them game changers, the steal on their own tryline and then the steal to set up his own game winning try. Has really turned a corner.

Ardie’s steal on the goalline was The Game-Changer. Boks were ready to score and put the test match to bed. Ardie made sure that didn’t happen.

Think it was Karl T, Marx, Franks, Etzebeth, Mostert, du Toit, Pocock, Read, Faf, Sanchez, Crotty, Goodhue, Ioane, Dyanti, Le Roux

I can't complain about much in that team, other than Bono Cockwomble. WTF do people see in him?

Especially when Kolisi was all kinds of awesome in the games I watched.

Karl with the greatest debut propping season ever for an AB.

Might need to kick a conversion to be ahead of Kent Lambert! 🙂

You'd have to go some to have a more startling debut than Lambert

In 1971 he was playing club rugby as a flanker.

In 1972 he decided to try out as a prop.

Within 12 months he represented NZ Universities, Junior AB's, made his AB debut as a mid weeker (kicking that conversion) made his test debut against Scotland (mighty Mouse Ian McLaughlin) scoring a try and NZ Maori. And competed in the Golden Shears.

    All before he turned 21!!!!!

Then fucks off to league after helping beat the Lions in 77 because he can't afford to stay in rugby

The NDP is about keeping toxic personalities away from the squad.
Yet they’ve made an effort to keep him with the squad (as an additional player) two years in a row when he has missed selection.

The AB coaches have said they want to fix technical deficiencies (thanks Blues coaches!) That seems legit rather than inventing other reasons

Sure it's fair, if you're going to apply the same thought process to the other team also. I definitely don't see the ABs as having a habit of this.

It is a desperation to defend their line against teams that are already too far behind to kick penalties. Teams who don't concede a try have to wait for a mistake or it ends in a yellow card. Suspect the ABs have done the maths and would rather concede a yellow than a try.

    As Boks against Oz.

This game was a nasty shock. Shades of Chicago 2016 in the All Blacks terrible option-taking and of Cardiff 2007 for poor game management. Massive credit to the Boks for making all those tackles and taking their chances in attack. The Old Foe is back.

The All Blacks have been Bledisloe Cup holders for 16 years, the Number One team for 9 years and World Champions for 7. Success can breed success, but it can also breed complacency. Some of the All Blacks were complacent in Wellington.

Hansen, Foster and Fox need to be unsentimental and weed out of Thier squad any players who ain't as hungry for success as their Saffa, Irish, Welsh or English peers. Winning back to back to back World Cups will require the All Blacks to work harder than any other international team in the next 13 and half months.

    k lowen yes

    The Cambridge derby. 🙂

I played Sunday football against Lowen a few times and often ended up marking him. Surprisingly quick for his size.

I made the mistake of going to play touch, that turned into league, with a bunch of Hautapu guys as my mate played for them. I tried to tackle Lowen. I feel I know how Mike Catt felt when he tried to tackle Jonah.
