    Watched this today. Main notes:

Top quality skills on display. Like watching both these teams go around but fuck me Scotland can be cynical.

Scotland should have had a yellow card inside the first 20 minutes. Every time a ruck headed toward their line they invariably infringed. Pickerill bottled that.

Meanwhile, Williams was on one sideline calling out everything against Japan, ignoring anything in blue - both sides were playing merry hell with the last feet.

45th minute, Japan are moving upfield with pace. Ruck forms and Blue #4 is never onside - advantage.

Kick through, regather Japan 14, tackled just short by Blue 11. Ball is popped up for a supporting player but Blue 11, still on his knees, grabs it.

Clear penalty try. Nothing between Japan support runner but paint - as they say if you took out the offending player, would the try have been scored? Probably-to-definitely. Yellow card as well thanks. It was even replayed multiple times on the big screen and the officials still didn't want to know about it.

Call me cynical, but if it had gone the other way there would have been a fucking inquest and a YC/PT the way things have gone this tour.

I’ll just call you a Scotsman instead

My mother was 25% Scot, so I'm 100% not.

If you opt out of buying a round one in every four pub sessions you know why.

All over. Finn "Dan Carter" Russell not having his best game, but not helped by Scottish forwards getting absolutely dominated.

Showed today he’s not a Test player

Well, aside from 50 odd caps for Scotland, two Lions tours and generally being lauded as the most creative 10 in the UK you’re definitely right.

International player who blows very hot & very cold.

That’s not a Test player in my book.

Spencer v Mehrtens springs to mind.

So if you have an off game you’re not a test player ?

He’s had a tad more than one

Oh for sure but I think an apt description of him and his style of play is “mercurial”…..a bit like Spencer as you mentioned, Quade Cooper and his coach Gregor Townsend. I don’t think you can really label him “not a test player” as just the week before he orchestrated a very good win over Australia.

He also does extremely well for someone built like a pro soccer player.

There’s no doubting his talent and skills.

He may well be remembered as one of Scotland’s greats.

Shallow pool but yeah. Up there with Townsend, Chalmers and Rutherford.

I just checked the 6N odds out of interest. Clearly the bookies / betting public don't think this is a new dawn for the Scots

    France 48/29
    England 5/2
    Ireland 9/2
    Wales 6/1
    Scotland 12/1
    Italy 1000/1

12 is better than 1000 though

True. And probably better value too.

I haven't watched this game yet. Is it worth watching, or should I just go straight to the highlights clip?

    Just watch the highlights

Lost of stoppages in the second half. Tonga didn't offer much resistance.. so you'll see the shitty tackling in the tries

    Bottled it

There's already thousands of Scots roaming the streets of Cardiff, many of whom were in Italy a couple of weeks back.

    Where's the consistency?

@Bones It's the fortnight where Ireland has become easier to beat than Scotland (or Japan)!

    Now you get it.

You both need to lay off the hard stuff! 🙂

Lame way for Samoa to go out of the cup, and to think I gave them a shot before the game started haha. Scotland did what they had to tonight, but on that performance, I'd back the Japanese to beat them.

@antipodean said in RWC: Scotland v Samoa (Pool A):

Samoa looked like they hadn't assembled before this week. Made Scotland look competent and dangerous!

I'd also backed Samoa to have a shot today. But they just didn't seem to pitch up.

Was that the faint hope of a Springbok nation not wanting to play Ireland in a QF?

Not really. It was more a case of making for an interesting pool.
That pool is already a shoot-out, a Samoan victory would have made it even more so.

If we get Ireland in the QF so be it. Those knock-out games are going to be tightly contested, never mind who you face.

    @Chester-Draws

A rule like "A player must not take any action to make the opposing team think that the ball is out of the ruck while it is still in the ruck"?

Rule 16.4 (f) in other words.

Yep, definition of "still in the ruck" though is questionable?

*16.6: A ruck ends successfully when the ball leaves the ruck, or when the ball is on or over the goal line.

    (c)
When the ball has been clearly won by a team at a ruck and the ball is available to be played the referee will call "Use it!" after which the ball must be played within five seconds. If the ball is not played within five seconds the referee will award a scrum and the team not in possession of the ball at the ruck is awarded the throw-in.*

So unless the ref calls "use it" the ball is still in, and "hands off' for the opposition as I see it. A lot of refs are getting that wrong I reckon.

Yep. And five seconds seems an awful long time often.

It sure as hell did during the Lions tour.

Hmm. Strong is the bitterness in this one.

Ha - yeah. A little bitter, if only because it felt like we lost a couple of minutes of rugby, per game, with the Lions taking FULL advantage of that 5-seconds, every single fucking time. Well within their rights, of course, but it was jarring, after a season of Super BANG BANG BOOM BOOM Rugby.
And @Chester-Draws comment is a good point - it's better having clear ball and getting the game going again ASAP... perhaps the current laws are all good, we just need an edict to the refs to be more aggressive about giving the "use it!" command?
