It’s great but it should be at Quay Park over the the railway land. I don’t know why these guys (EPTB) don’t sell their bloody land, get a consortium together, and use the proceeds to build exactly what they have presented here at Quay Park right next to Spark Arena (or whatever it is called now). They could still call it Eden park.
That location has ALL the transport links. Every railway line in the city converges there. The ferries are one stop away at Britomart. The Tamaki Drive arterial to the eastern suburbs is right there. The busways are down the road (again one stop away at Britomart or the future Aotea station). The motorway spaghetti junction is not that far away up Stanley street. There won’t be any complaining residents (they live next to railway lines they can hardly complain about a stadium). They could host everything there 24/7 all year long and make all the money they want.

Because it's mana whenua land and none of the various Quay Park proposals have invited input from Nagti Whatua o Orakei. Understandably, given the history of land confiscations, going public with plans for a stadium without consulting with the people who own the land you want to build on has been less than constructive.

No that’s incorrect. Ngati Whatua were in full support of the Quay Park site being used for a stadium. They’d actually get ground rent from such a deal. They already had plans to develop that dead land and a stadium was a catalyst for it. The last time the quay park proposal was floated, Ngati Whatua were in full support.

I do remember residents in Parnell, above the site complaining about the noise and dust from a potential construction site
. It's a no brainer and IIRC people back a few years ago said the site by Spark Arena was too small, hence the push for Jellicoe wharf. I don't know what's changed if my memory is correct -

All the rail lines would go underneath the stadium with a big event station there to serve both the eastern and southern/western/CRL lines.

I do think people consistently underestimate the footprint required for a stadium. It's not just the structure itself, but if workable I agree adjacent to Spark Arena makes a lot of sense.
I just question the need for a new stadium - other than to bail EPTB out of a financial hole.

A new stadium would ideally be funded in part by sale or redevelopment of the land that EP sits on. Which I'd imagine isn't gonna happen

Warriors should be told they ground share EP
That move (and the change of focus for Mt Smart) has been talked about for ages. It's probably complicated by Moana Pasifika now. Their dozens of fans would have to move too
Before covid there was going to be a double header at Eden Park. The Warriors in an NRL match followed by a Blues SR match. I'd like to see that scheduled again to see how well it works

Yeah I’m ambivalent about that proposal only for the outrage it would create lol. It’ll be far too hard to persuade people to support it. Hence my support for Quay Park.
But wouldn’t the idea be to reclaim land from the harbour? It wouldn’t necessarily be plonking a stadium in the harbour like Kelly Tarltons.

If you don't need to reclaim though, as the railway proposal suggests, why bother doing so? Just more expense

I remember there were quite a few Eden Park supporters on council - eg: Mike Lee, Wayne Walker, John Watson, Efeso Collins, and Daniel Newman who were vehemently opposed to a new stadium. These all happened to be the “opposition” (B team) who never voted with Goff on many things during Goff’s terms.

Respectfully, the engineering for a stadium down there is not particularly complex. Keeping water out isn't hard, and in some ways flooding is a lower risk beside the sea. There are lots of issues with a stadium there, but engineering isn't the issue

You might know more than me on the subject. But in my experience water is pervasive, it will find a way in eventually. So a stadium that sits basically underwater is a big risk. I don't think it pays to fight mother nature when it comes to a billion dollar investment

you realise that all the basements downtown (and in most cities) are underwater? Waterproofing is part of design, and it's readily achievable. Hell, they were doing it reliably 50 years ago - the wost thing yo uget is a bit of seepage if things aren't perfect.
Plus, the port reclamation typically has Auckland rock (very soft rock, but good for building on) nice and shallow. You'd just sit on that, build up - it's a few metres of excavation at most. By comparison, Westpac Stadium is sitting on shitty old reclamation, and has monstrous seismic loads (like 6-8 times bigger than Auckland).
I'll stand by my assertion that Engineering isn't the issue
