@gt12 so he misses 1 tackle a game then. That’s hardly a sackable offence. There is a sting in how he hits rucks and is a nuisance in slowing ball. His tight play has allowed other props to flourish that are more ball running inclined. He is a key lifter at lineout time and his hands are superb when he is used to catch flat bullets from Smith.

Thought that would send off the bat sign.

Lately (i.e., last five or 6 games), it's pretty much always two actual missed tackles, and I wonder if that is because he is getting tired?

He did well against Australia, but less well against the French. Overall, I have him at about 78% success for this year, and 1.9 missed tackles over 80 minutes across 10 matches - including the three matches where he missed none. Source: ESPN stats

    vs England, 44 minutes, made 6, missed 2 (75%, 3.6 for 80 minutes)
    vs Australia (Tokyo), 52 minutes, made 5, missed 2 (71%, 3.1 for 80 minutes)
vs SA (in SA), 45 minutes, made 9, missed 2 (82%, 3.6 for 80 minutes)
    vs SA (Wellington), 48 minutes, made 2, missed 1 (66%, 1.7 for 80 minutes)
    vs Argentina (Nelson), 46 minutes, made 3, missed 2 (60%, 3.5 for 80 minutes)
    vs Aus (Auckland), 51 minutes, made 11, missed 0 (100%, 0 for 80 minutes)
    vs Aus (Sydney), 58 minutes, made 8, missed 0 (100%, 0 for 80 minutes)
    vs France (Dunedin), 45 minutes, made 10, missed 2 (83%, 3.6 for 80 minutes)
    vs France (Wellington), 33 minutes, made 3, missed 3 (50%, 7.3 for 80 minutes)
    vs France (Auckland), 57 minutes, made 5, missed 0 (100%, 0 for 80 minutes)

Something that may be a positive for Franks, is that for some reason he still draws tacklers, even though he pretty much goes to ground before he even reaches them. With nothing to back this up - it's pretty rare to turnover from a Franks carry and I'd say it's often quick ball (obviously goes hand-in-hand with a negative or zero metres carry).

Could be? These turnovers aren't necessarily from carries, but ESPN says:

vs England, 44 minutes, 4 runs, 1 metres, 0 turnovers
vs Australia (Tokyo), 52 minutes, 4 runs, 0 metres, 0 turnovers
vs SA (in SA), 45 minutes, 0 runs, 0 metres, 0 turnovers
vs SA (Wellington), 48 minutes, 3 runs, 0 metres, 0 turnovers
vs Argentina (Nelson), 46 minutes, 7 runs, 3 metres, 1 turnovers
vs Aus (Auckland), 51 minutes, 4 runs, 1 metres, 0 turnovers
vs Aus (Sydney), 58 minutes, 3 runs, 0 metres, 1 turnovers
vs France (Dunedin), 45 minutes, 3 runs, 2 metres, 0 turnovers
vs France (Wellington), 33 minutes, 4 runs, 3 metres, 1 turnover
vs France (Auckland), 57 minutes, 4 runs, 0 metres, 0 turnovers

We all know he's not much of a ball runner.

@gt12 4 turnovers in 36 runs, around about 1 every 3 games. Seems pretty sound.

Joe Stanley was the big hard midfielder of that era and was under 90kg if I recall correctly.

Just makes me realise how much the AB selectors missed a trick by not picking Marty 'Chuck' Berry. He woulda absolutely dominated.

According to his stats, he was 83kg. That's probably lighter than Andrew Mehrtens.

That’s not saying much.Have you seen Mehrtens lately?
He was at the cafe when I had breakfast with Joe Moody , Jerome Kaino , Damien McKenzie and Liam Squire . Mehrts defence was always a bit suspect but he can tackle any buffet by the looks of him.

Saw Fitzy on Saturday. Looked fit enough to carry Mehrts under one arm to said buffet without breaking sweat.

Marshall had the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck in a way other halfbacks couldn't, aside from maybe Weepu. From memory the 2003 RWC game against Wales. There's a lot to admire about that, but it's an easy vote for Smith for me. He makes the rest of the team play better, which is what I consider to be the halfback's key role.

@ACT-Crusader and @gt12 I think one of Owen's extra roles is to carry the aura!! But more seriously I think he does have some intimidation factor around scrummaging and ruck clean outs etc. Plus every now again he REALLY tags people in the tackle.

Randall could also only do two chin ups at Highlanders training. This is less than @Rocky-Rock-Rockbottom rock and @NTA

Man this thread has become 'fern-retarded'

                                    Marshall v Smith? Good grief!

Says the guy living every young girls childhood dream, go tend to your ponies.

I don't get the reference to your post and fern-retarded?

                                    Prexactly.

@ACT-Crusader and @gt12 I think one of Owen's extra roles is to carry the aura!! But more seriously I think he does have some intimidation factor around scrummaging and ruck clean outs etc. Plus every now again he REALLY tags people in the tackle.

Number one is that he provides a strong and stable scrum. Very rare that he goes backwards and he doesn't seem to get penalized much - especially compared to whomever plays loosehead.

I though Laulala had some trouble on Saturday coming off the bench, where Owen didn't starting.

You don't rush to get rid of that.
