Rugby is better - but it's not got the global reach of soccer.
Soccer is ridiculously simple to play - any number of players, anything round and not crazily hard, and you've got a game.

It was obviously monumental for the AWs to get to the Cup and you can only play what’s in front of you, but I just consider their qualification draw something of a joke. New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu then Bahrain. Now if they’d had to beat a European or South American side to get in that would be a different story

To go on about their achievements is celebrating “participating” a bit too much for my liking.
Soccer is a different beast and they certainly did themselves proud at the cup and it was great to watch, but yeah it does seem a little weird to celebrate not losing but still going out in the first round. Maybe a bit like making the final of the Olympic 100m sprint and not coming last?

Pretty hard to separate a lot of these. BB scoring the final try in 2015 will also stand out for me, maybe cos my son was 6 at the time and we were up at 3am watching together - guess that's the silly thing about trying to choose a single moment, everyone experiences these things differently

It definitely isn’t true. Both Scotland (1974) and Cameroon (1982) were unbeaten but went out.

We are good at rowing, but it's a very small sport, with an over-representation of medals. What other traditional team sport (where you all do the same thing) can you be 15th best in your country and come home with a gold medal?
I am absolutely not denigrating the achievements, as they are amazing. But the pool of competitors is so much smaller. Hell, Bond and Murray were so good other competitors jumped into different boats to avoid them.
So, yes we should celebrate our rowing success, as it's damn hard and damn competitive. But we should also recognise the All Whites and the Basketballers coming 4th in a world championship (2002).. The scale of that event is so much bigger.
@nzzp That report has Aussie Rules as its 42nd most dominant sport. I call BS on that one. It says the rankings are based on media stories from chosen countries. I'm guessing not many countries were chosen and the fact that the melbourne papers have ninety five million features a day on RULZ has given aerial ping pong a misleading global importance

Lower tier of the North Stand towards the terraces end. I sat in the West Stand for other games (QF, SF).

I think I was near you. In line with the 22 at the end Beaver kicked his goal over. Had that grumpy old curmudgeon Murray Deaker behind me. I remember the cops lining the sidelines in the second 40, like they were worried about a pitch invasion. It was pretty quiet and tense in the final 15 despite me and my mates trying to rark everyone around us into action

I don't think I've felt that wound up over rugby ever since. 24 years of pain and suffering expunged in 80 minutes. The peace I felt the next morning was so profound

Considering the hour in which I started drinking I’m amazed I finished it
that whole tournament was jsut amazing. I don't care what it cost, was one of the highlihgts of my rugby watching life. I went to 13 games, missed a 14th because of the birth of my child (probably excusable).
That weather on the opening day match against Tonga was just insane. Auckland went nuts, it was like the last day of schoold before the holidays. Just a massive celebration of rugby. So so much fun.
Most enjoyable game of rugby for me was Tonga Canada up in Whangarei. Okara park was packed, was just a great day out and a really good game of rugby

That weather on the opening day match against Tonga was just insane. Auckland went nuts, it was like the last day of schoold before the holidays. Just a massive celebration of rugby. So so much fun.
Most enjoyable game of rugby for me was Tonga Canada up in Whangarei. Okara park was packed, was just a great day out and a really good game of rugby
@nzzp me too man. Flew back for the while group stage, went to a heap of games in a bunch of different places. Opening day trying to get a train in to town we knew something was different.
Be hard to top I reckon.
