I swept the 5 leaves off my patio (okay used the leaf blower) so we yeah we good

Still a fair whack of water around and a few fallen trees but otherwise she's apples

I saw footage of someone's car - they parked right near what looked like the biggest tree on their street. Insurance job? 😉

@Bones Make sure you go to Russell.

There are beautiful beaches and bays all down the east coast of Northland. There's a wonderful little bay just near Cape Reinga, but I've forgotten its name. 😕

Tutukaka is stunning, and closer to Auckland, Tawharanui is great. Cliff walk at Mangawhai Heads is worth it. Need to time it with the tides though.

An unofficial guide to the best beaches in Northland

@Tim cheers mate, that's sparked an idea to wander down to Opua, get across to Okiato then make our way to Russell from there, hopefully can hire a bike.

If you're a fan of awesomely meaty pizza and craft beer, stop off at McLeod's pizza barn in waipu. Paihia best eats are CBK, tipsy Oyster, and bad habits. I go there at least twice a year for weekend with the wife

If you are travelling south from the Bay of Islands towards Whangarei try turning of SH1 at Hikurangi onto the Twin Coast Discovery Highway (Marua Rd). It takes you on a loop through farmland and onto some of the nice east coast beaches already mentioned. (Sandy, Woolleys and Whale Bays, Matapouri and Tutukaka).
Do not turn of onto the Whananaki Road unless you wish encounter very senior politicians on their summer break.

It is such an eclectic place, with great food, booze, t-shirts, off-licence, deli, and butchery.

I had a bacon margarita last time there lol

I spent one very drunken evening doing a pub-crawl around Auckland requesting a Chicken Martini from every bar. Until one place finally called my bluff.
