@brodean WR have decided a deliberate knock on is foul play. We might not like it but that's the ruling.

At least it is generally ruled consistently

Truth be told JB would probably do at least as well at 10 as Beauden and Mckenzie. With a bit of time in the saddle his kicking for field position could be a real weapon. Especially combined with a lineout including Holland, Tuipulotu/Darry, and Vaa'i.

After years of kiwis criticising 10 man old school English rugby you want to emulate it?!
I joke, it is good to able to execute it when required!

Nb I just realised you left out a lock/captain there...

Definitely a time and place for territory kicking, we don't utilise it much at all. And when we do it, we generally don't do it well

Very few, if any, have mentioned our defence, so I assume people are happy with it? Me, I think it is still a weak point. When the French got into a position to score they either did or they came bloody close. It seemed inevitable that our line would be crossed. It reminded me of the Irish in NZ a few years ago.

The defense improved for the duration of the first half.

The following quote probably applies on attack and defence. This quote was made after the All Blacks lost to the Pumas. The backline was JB, ALB, Tele'a and Reece. The following week against SA they picked Rieko, and Clarke over ALB and Reece.

Quote from Victor Matfield last year:

“I went through that whole game on Monday afternoon. I rewound it, forwarded it, I really went through that game and when they were under pressure, I looked back at the days when the All Blacks were really scary,” he said on Final Whistle Presents Side Entry on SuperSport.

“The one thing they always had were athletes that were better than other teams. Their backline players were bigger and faster than other teams. They don’t have it.

“If I look at the All Blacks backs, they don’t have better athletes than any other team. If you compare them against South Africa, if you give our wingers the one-on-one, our wingers will be better.

“If you give our centres a go, our centres will be better than theirs. You’ve never had that. There’s no Tana Umaga, there’s no Ma’a Nonu, there’s no Jonah Lomu, there’s no Christian Cullen. They don’t have that at the moment.”

‘They don’t have it’ – Springboks legend offers theory for All Blacks’ struggles

The great Springbok Victor Matfield believes that it is not issues with the game plan or coaching that is currently letting the All Blacks down.

Matfield, an excellent player, and he can say whatever he thinks is the case, but hard to take what he says objectively when he still says….

Forward pack was fantastic, Patty T had a great game, impressive. Holland the Lio-Willie looking like natural players in the test match arena, Vaa'i surprisingly mobile and looking good at 6. Savea looking good at 7 and the forward pack is a lot more balenced I feel. Reiko looking good on the wing. Credit where credit is due the selctins have been on point.

Ourbackline however not overly brilliant, ball still gets stuck in midfield, we seemed to have lost the ability for the backline to make space or to effectivly manipulate the defence for players to hit gaps.

Dare I say it after the weekends display this teams best change maybe playing 10 man rugby - well 9 man rugby, Roigard can kick the ball better than BB...

Robertson's plan was to give everyone a run according to him.

Proctor has very much been a mixed bag.

Kirifi was picked on his ability to win turnovers and his good discipline. He hasn't won a single turnover so far and gave away 3 penalties in 20 minutes yesterday.

Yep, I heard the statement from coach, just saying I hate it.

I’d personally agree on Proctor, but I’d add that the consensus seems to be a decent T2 improvement on a fairly forgettable T1 - so why not give him another go to see if he can build on it? We know what ALB and Rieko offer there, let’s carry on with creating depth.

    > Kirifi looked so frustrated today arguing with the ref didn’t he?

I'm pretty neutral on what happens with Proctor at the moment but it would seem that Proctor was a big part of their plan. The backline hasn't been great though and we got out to an early lead yesterday by keeping it tight.

I've always suspected that Kirifi would not go well with refs who are not Kiwis or Aussies. I doubt the coaches will appreciate the ongoing dialogue he was having with the ref

Interesting seeing a lot of these guys up close in my first AB test since 2011.

The thought of injuries striking and a loose trio of Savea, Lio Willie and Kirifi on the field at the same time is too ridiculous for words. We know what Ardie brings but the other two will just get rag dolled by bigger teams. They honestly looked like halfbacks out there. Savea is still such an X factor player though. The run to set up Vaai was amazing to see.

Reiko Ioane is bigger than I thought he’d be. Would have been good to see him have a crack on the outside. Possibly not as sharp as he used to be.

TNT a pocket battleship, worth persevering with.

Proctor a bit rocks and diamonds.

Jordie effective and did well to bounce back from that tip tackle.

Tuipulotu toiled hard, seems rough he’ll probably be jettisoned when Barrett comes back because they’ll certainly keep Holland on the park as much as possible.

Vaai going from strength to strength. This could be his long term position. Not good news for Finau who did nothing.

Food excellent if over priced ( I had two separate feeds as I was starving ). Beer tolerable.

Was at game too MN5, thoroughly enjoyed it (not unusual usually do go and enjoy tests). Wouldn't really argue with any of your points. The couple of takeaways I got was Holland was f***en good again, Vaa'i just looks the part of a good big 6, and I not convinced about Lio-Willie. Thought Proctor was not bad at all, can't remember Reiko doing a better job at 13 for a good while. Was overly pretty pleased, though it got messy at end when game was wrapped up.

What does this guys actually bring to the table ?

Not taking the piss, genuine question if anyone wants to answer

I don’t think he’s been bad but it’s a little bit of last man standing with him. They could’ve selected Sotutu in the original squad but other than that, looking at the current squad and the list of injured players, I think Lio-Willie is a guy we won’t see much of when other players get fit. There are a few players in the squad right now who I feel are only there because there’s not much else around right now.

Absolutely insane that they wouldn't give Sotutu a run there given the injuries. They just don't even want to give the guy a chance.

Oddly pre-Razor, our goal line defence was often really good, but in general play where we defended at depth was where we really struggled.

Now we are a bit better in general play but I think our goal line defence is worse...

The second half was piss poor. The ABs will need to lift up their standards against the Springboks on 6 September if they want to keep the invincibility of Eden Park. Remember it was just France B/C. They need Williams, Lomax and Sititi back as soon as possible and find : 1) a 1st Five 2) a centre 3) at least one wing who has speed. Finishing the game with a LF trio of Kirifi - Savea - Lio Willie must not be seen again.

@cgrant At least they are trying out a centre (Proctor) and a winger (Ioane). They've also had a crack at doing something about the loosie balance - so kudos for all of that.
But 10 is a problem they're not even trying to solve.

    Diamonds?

1st half was forgettable. Did some really good stuff on D & some nice handling touches in 2nd half.

Super Rugby bias’s aside you’ll be pushed to find many Ferners that don’t want to see Tangitau get a chance when he’s ready. He looks to be a real weapon.
