It's funny how some people pick up that one paragraph in the article about not including Maori or PI members in the selection panel, or more women.

The whole article is more an argument for including people from outside the NZR establishment. Reason would be that they might ask the candidates different questions, because they have different backgrounds. They'd think outside the box. I do agree with that and, for that reason, I think Waimarama Taumaunu is a good choice.

Where the article becomes ridiculous is where Norquay suggests that Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe and - especially - My Food Bag entrepreneurs Nadia Lim and Theresa Gattung as panel members. Business leaders could be useful as members of the NZR board, but I don't see what they bring when selecting a head coach. Former ABs (or BFs) could be useful; experienced head coaches of other major sports teams as well. If one or more of those are Maori or PI that would be great, but it should be the sole reason for inviting them to sit on the panel.

Apart from that, Norquay just sounds like an arrogant prick, who has a very simplistic view of sports coaching.

If only NZR had the benefit of looking at boards comprised of skills outside of rugby to see how well they could be run, like the Blues for example...

@Stargazer If you're having a five person panel, I'd want at least three from the rugby establishment- so at most you're swapping out one person for someone more diverse.

I hope they don't put much weight on the formal interviews - I want someone who is a good coach, not someone who is good at interviews.

Don't think John Mitchell has been approached. The job ad specifically says the NZRU are looking for the best and not a journeyman.

Cueball only ever coached what he called "Development Teams" IIRC...

Robertson mentioned he coached club sides.
What was his record like at that level?

It's got to be Jamie Joseph. Just imagine the fast way Japan play, yet with more power. And equal passion. It matches the way the All Blacks should play, like an unstoppable swarm through the forwards, combined with big fast wings and FB, and with great all round backline skills that break open defences like a hot knife through butter.
-kick catching, kicking for territory should be practiced to a higher level.

Couldn't Rennie be involved as well, forwards coach, as well as talent spotter throughout the provinces?

I am wary of Robertson, becuse he does lack experience, and now is missing Tony Brown - I think that has hurt him cos he is now looking for someone to go with - not ideal. I really like the idea of him coming in as assistant with a view to taking over in 4 years, JJ with Tony B and Robertson I'd love + specialist coaches

I think that's really odd. Maybe it is just he knows he would be a PitA as assistant, a problem not a help. Otherwise it is a very well travelled path he is turning down, I reckon he'll have to do an overseas head coach first, unless he assembles a really good team

When you say "well travelled path" you mean it's happened once? With Steve Hansen? Scott Robertson has has success at every level as a coach, at club, U20's, provincial and Super Rugby levels. Why would he or should he play second fiddle to an absolute pretender like Ian Foster who has never had any success as a Head Coach?
