@nostrildamus My problem with Marx is that he is not going for the ball, he is going for the penalty. He leans on the player and holds the ball into the player. Ref sees a picture and .....

Well the captain or the coach needs to have a word. We weren't helped by the ref but when have we last played the ref well? I can't honestly remember!

we seem to sit back passively and let the ref figure out on their own what's going wrong.

I fundamentally disagree about teams waving arms at the refs, but every other bloody side is doing it. We're not good enough at the moment to take the moral high ground; get in his ear and influence.

Cane shoudl be spending a bit of time with McCaw to get his knowledge. Lines like 'is that the standard now sir' is just respectful and clear and enables people to then push right to the limit. Far more 'us' than screaming and flapping arms.

It's nice that Foz is plainly a humble and decent man. But most great coaches marched to their own drum, and they had a bit of the devil to them - Henry, Woodward, Eddie Jones, Erasmus and Razor ( These guys are all capable of thriving in extreme environments.) Fozzie would be most at ease in a tearoom outside Tirau scoffing a lamington.

Managed to throw a subtle fat joke in there at the end.

        THAT is ferning.

In a sport like rugby where the application of the laws isn’t always easy - “no two situations are the same” - there has to be an element of playing to the ref. Call it playing “close to the line” or “on the edge”, or “getting in the refs ear”, but really what that means is putting doubt in the ref’s mind to not blow a penalty and for you and your team to get an advantage.

No doubt that the more you are able to exploit that will come a confidence in what you are doing. The good players will be able to do that. The great players can do that and also adjust when required.

I can actually see what Foster is trying to do but his ideas are being headed off at the pass before they can even get settled.

What is he trying to do?

See two posts above yours for some examples.

Like players, refs evolve and try to get better at their craft too. They aren’t robots either and with the expansion of the game, we are getting younger less experienced refs out there in test matches.

They are watching video of game situations and being assessed on their performances too, so they will be influenced by not only what the laws are but by what they learn in certain situations. And a factor in that is what the players are doing and saying around them.

Now how that explains what happened at the death in the 3rd Lions test in 2017, I do not know 😉

If we lose this week he'll be gone.

The smart move by the Boks will be to throw this game.

If that was the case, it would be interesting to see who was tapped on the shoulder to step up in the interim.

Surely even NZR wouldn't be contemplating it without speaking to some prospective candidates. And there's a distinct lack of whispers being leaked.

Schmidt has stayed behind in NZ. If they need an interim coach he is already there, and NZ play two back to back games in NZ against Argentina, so Schmidt doesn't have to travel.

But that sounds far too organised for the NZRU 😂

I am leaning toward the sauce being correct at this stage.
I think Foster is gone even if somehow they win at Ellis Park.
Joe Schmidt as new coach with Razor, MacDonald and Ryan as assistants.
