@nostrildamus My problem with Marx is that he is not going for the ball, he is going for the penalty. He leans on the player and holds the ball into the player. Ref sees a picture and .....

Well the captain or the coach needs to have a word. We weren't helped by the ref but when have we last played the ref well? I can't honestly remember!

we seem to sit back passively and let the ref figure out on their own what's going wrong.

I fundamentally disagree about teams waving arms at the refs, but every other bloody side is doing it. We're not good enough at the moment to take the moral high ground; get in his ear and influence.

Cane shoudl be spending a bit of time with McCaw to get his knowledge. Lines like 'is that the standard now sir' is just respectful and clear and enables people to then push right to the limit. Far more 'us' than screaming and flapping arms.

In a sport like rugby where the application of the laws isnโ€™t always easy - โ€œno two situations are the sameโ€ - there has to be an element of playing to the ref. Call it playing โ€œclose to the lineโ€ or โ€œon the edgeโ€, or โ€œgetting in the refs earโ€, but really what that means is putting doubt in the refโ€™s mind to not blow a penalty and for you and your team to get an advantage.

No doubt that the more you are able to exploit that will come a confidence in what you are doing. The good players will be able to do that. The great players can do that and also adjust when required.

McCaw got better at manipulating the refs as he went on. Fitzy too

Like players, refs evolve and try to get better at their craft too. They arenโ€™t robots either and with the expansion of the game, we are getting younger less experienced refs out there in test matches.

They are watching video of game situations and being assessed on their performances too, so they will be influenced by not only what the laws are but by what they learn in certain situations. And a factor in that is what the players are doing and saying around them.

Now how that explains what happened at the death in the 3rd Lions test in 2017, I do not know ๐Ÿ˜‰

No way he will do the honourable thing. His selection of hookers and reasoning for it tells you everything you need to know about his thought process and respectability.

If we lose this week he'll be gone.

The smart move by the Boks will be to throw this game.

If that was the case, it would be interesting to see who was tapped on the shoulder to step up in the interim.

Surely even NZR wouldn't be contemplating it without speaking to some prospective candidates. And there's a distinct lack of whispers being leaked.

Schmidt has stayed behind in NZ. If they need an interim coach he is already there, and NZ play two back to back games in NZ against Argentina, so Schmidt doesn't have to travel.

But that sounds far too organised for the NZRU ๐Ÿ˜‚

I am leaning toward the sauce being correct at this stage.
I think Foster is gone even if somehow they win at Ellis Park.
Joe Schmidt as new coach with Razor, MacDonald and Ryan as assistants.

I am leaning toward the sauce being correct at this stage.
I think Foster is gone even if somehow they win at Ellis Park.
Joe Schmidt as new coach with Razor, MacDonald and Ryan as assistants.

That would either be an extraordinary coaching team or too many egos in the room to work.

Also Joe doesn't want to travel anymore. But that group would be exciting. Joe as the guy with test team experience overseeing it all, Razor as the alpha dog ready to assume the reins in the near future

Not totally sure that is true as of now. May have been b4.

Agreed. Why would Razor agree to being someone else's assistant when that wasn't acceptable previously?

@antipodean cos it was Fozzie and he could see what most could too?

                                          But otherwise agree.
