Exhibition game. You can argue whether playing it like that was a good idea or not, but that was very clearly the intention for the whole game - so criticising guys throwing it around and rash offloads etc is kinda missing the point.
    Good things:
Aumua finally got a decent run, his early throwing yips improved, and he showed some of the offensive and defensive power that could see him become a real asset.
Some decent minutes into both the giant props.
    Big Pat played pretty well.
    Finau more minutes more confidence.
Sititi unsurprisingly at home at 8.
    Roigard getting more minutes.
    Bad things:
Roigard was pretty average really, apart from the try - and there's only so much credit you can give for that with Japan's tackling performance. Hopefully he still makes the England team.
Defensive alignment was really poor at times. Soft tries conceded, and a few glaring missed tackles.

Disappointed Robertson didn't leave him out longer. maybe had a minor niggle?

That's all true and it's fine if we are winning (and well) but we're really not.

At this stage in his coaching cycle, I'm not sure sticking with players at the very fag-end of their careers is the way to go - it just reduces the time he has to build the team he wants.

      Yeah - but, there's only a handful.

Cane and Perenara have already announced that they're gone - and there's only a handful of others who are possibly too old to go to the next world cup. Taylor, Tuúngafasi, Tuipolotu, Beauden, Havili, Reece and Telea.

When you line them up against Mealamu, Woodcock, Thorn, DC, Nonu - it';s only the wings that almost certainly won't make it because it's rare they get to 30.

I guess my point is that we've got tons of time.

I don't want to lose matches to develop newbies this year.

@Victor-Meldrew yeah I dont understand subbing him early. He certainly hasn't had too much rugby, he has had a couple of games to get some match fitness, and zero to gain by playing TJP. Maybe a niggle, or maybe it points to them already deciding they are starting him next week, because otherwise there seems no upside.

          Yes.

Watch him get interviewed by Jeff Wilson and Google will tell you he's nearly as tall as Jeff.

I'm all for it - taller and bigger hookers.

But the coaches have told us for years that they try to pack on as much as weight as possible - especially in the tight forwards - without compromising performance elsewhere.

The harsh reality is that you can't make short hookers much bigger. That's a huge problem for Ricky and Kurt - among others.

                              Yeah - but, there's only a handful.

Cane and Perenara have already announced that they're gone - and there's only a handful of others who are possibly too old to go to the next world cup. Taylor, Tuúngafasi, Tuipolotu, Beauden, Havili, Reece and Telea.

That's about 10 players though. And I'm not convinced Havili is the man for the future...

I don't want to lose matches to develop newbies this year.

At the moment we're losing matches and missing opportunities to develop newbies.

Creevy was apparently 1.81 metres tall.

Against Australia and Japan. The sides ranked 10th and 14th in the world. Wippee-do!

I don't expect Dave to make the next RWC either.

But for now, the third best second five that's not him hasn't yet stamped his mark, so in the meantime I'm happy enough to have him there.

They're going to pick Jordie, Reiko and ALB for the next three tests, barring injury - and Dave and Proctor seem like the next best cover to me.

We can play another round of Super mrugby and see who stamps themselves in.
