Nonu was appreciated in his time. But I think his stature has grown exponentially over the last decade since his international retirement.
Carter’s stature has probably remained the same

That’s what I mean. Everyone knew he got better and better but once he’d retired he did so as arguably the best 12 ever.

Most complete 12 I've ever seen. Had everything in his game and lot of that came from hard yakka. off the field.

I think there were players with more natural talent and skills. None had his work ethic,

When he debuted for the Canes Nonu was raw powerful and exciting but he tended to make fundamental errors that were exposed when he first played for the All Blacks. Over time he polished those edges and also added a decent kicking game and a very good passing game, two things that he never had at the start. Combined with his brutal physicality Nonu was a complete midfielder for the second half of his all black career. He also had a durability that is evident to this day as he still continues to play professionally

I remember the turnaround. Nothing spectacular just solid progress. We went from cringing when he came on a replacement to breathing a sigh of relief when he did.

For a while he seemed to act a little too cool, which rubbed some up the wrong way. But once he nailed down he was a killer. Still remember him stepping out of John Smit's grasp in his 100th test and smashing Giteau out of the 2015 final

ANALYSIS: Scott Robertson oversaw his fifth loss since taking charge of the All Blacks on Sunday, as they went down 29-23 against Argentina in Buenos Aires. The defeat came in Robertson’s 19th match since replacing Ian Foster at the helm of New Zealand’s national men’s rugby team at the start of last year.
He has now overseen five losses faster than the last four men to be in the hot seat before him – Foster, Sir Steve Hansen, Sir Graham Henry and John Mitchell.

                  https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360803932/five-losses-19-tests-how-scott-robertsons-start-compares-past-all-blacks-coaches

Yes but as James Parsons said if we had kicked all our shots at goal the All Blacks would have won, so all is grand.

I really hate comments like that - it's as if he thinks goal-kicking doesn't count. And comments like that really grate given we lost a World Cup final two years ago because we couldn't kick our goals.

What is undeniable is that, despite all our lamentations about the ABs, the Pumas only just got up.

BB kicks one conversion and Pumas late penalty correctly called as going outside left hand post and it was 26 - 22 when we get that last penalty.

ABs could easily have won that match, and without the mystery Vaa’i yellow almost certainly would have.

In other words the gloom and doom has been heavily overdone, which is JP’s point I think.

Argentina are always tough at home. But we were so fundamentally poor it was disgraceful. We could very well turn it around for the Boks. That in itself will be an indictment on the coaching group as it would suggest they took them lightly and failed to adequately prepare the team for Argie 2

                    Jesus wept.
Doom and gloom is overdone because we were close?
Argentina are always tough at home?

Argentina had literally never beaten us at home before.

They have come close before. I don't think it was unrealistic to say they are generally tough at home. And I didn't say anywhere that the doom and gloom was overdone

Yeah I was watching highlights of a test from that golden era where he played well in general play but missed at least 3 goal kicks. One was pretty standard too.

The worst AB coach since Wayne Smith. And who is Razor's advisor? Wayne Smith. All starting to make sense now.

                        Really?

Who was the best coach since Wayne Smith?

Who was the second best coach since Wayne Smith?

                        Who was their advisor?

It wasn't Wayne Smith was it?

My comment was tongue in cheek 🙂 Can't really overstate how good Wayne Smith has been for NZR. That said, there is something in the fact both Smith and Razor have struggled to go straight from Super to test level.

Ha - lucky I didn't really savage you.

I have trouble differentiating between tongue in cheek and total madness on the internet these days! 🙂

Either Jordie or Richie kick a penalty and we win the RWC2023. It matters. We don't value it.

It's why Carter was under rated if anything. Money in the bank.

Go and grab a beer, take a piss. 3 points in the bag by the time you come back.

I understand what you are hinting at here, but he really wasn't.

One of the very best things about his career is that everyone pretty much knew right away that he was a generational player and potentially the best ever. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have watched him and McCaw for so long.

Carter was never underrated. If anything Nonu was far more than him.

Carter’s stature has probably remained the same

That’s what I mean. Everyone knew he got better and better but once he’d retired he did so as arguably the best 12 ever.

Most complete 12 I've ever seen. Had everything in his game and lot of that came from hard yakka. off the field.

All the skills and a physical beast with it.

Fuck Tim Horan, Nonu is the GOAT

I think there were players with more natural talent and skills. None had his work ethic,

When he debuted for the Canes Nonu was raw powerful and exciting but he tended to make fundamental errors that were exposed when he first played for the All Blacks. Over time he polished those edges and also added a decent kicking game and a very good passing game, two things that he never had at the start. Combined with his brutal physicality Nonu was a complete midfielder for the second half of his all black career. He also had a durability that is evident to this day as he still continues to play professionally

Ugh, you've made the sentence unreadable now.

One of the good things to look at the at the situation in an encouraging way is that I cant see the back three being quite so poor at Eden Park. Maybe it could be replicated but I'm tempted to think they can't play that bad again.

Razors selections at wing have been super conservative this year - RI & Sevu 4 starts with just Jordan and Narawa usurping that and now he had to show faith with Narawa or some of the other wingers in the squad.

Playing a player on the wing who played all his super rugby this year at 13 partnered with a short/small player was eventually going to bite Razor in the ass.... Better in BA than Eden Park.

That's true, it's very rare for any of that back 3 to have dire games.

He had off days. Outsanding generally, but there were days he struggled with the boot.

I remember a game against the Bokke where he missed a lot ... even the best have off days.

Yeah I was watching highlights of a test from that golden era where he played well in general play but missed at least 3 goal kicks. One was pretty standard too.

Off the top of my head… 2008 Capetown vs the Boks. We won 18-5. Was a horrendous swirling wind. Carter overcompensated and missed a lot of kicks. So did Percy from their side. It was Percy’s 50th test too from memory.
